OK, what now?
After Saturday's loss to USC, the Dawgs are 2-3 after completing what I'm dubbing phase one of the season. With games against powerhouses like USC and Ohio State, phase one was like running the gauntlet. Even the "easier" games were against strong teams like UCLA and Boise State.
After this week's bye, they head into what is effectively phase two of the season which is what I'm calling the games against Arizona State and Oregon.
I believe that Washington needs no worse than a split in those two games to maintain bowl hopes. If they lose both, I believe that it will be tough to expect the Dawgs to win five out of their final six to get to a bowl.
Phase three features winnable games against Arizona, Oregon State, Washington State, and Stanford. If Washington plans to get to a bowl game, they practically have to win all of those games because they have tough games against Cal and Hawaii, as well.
Before the season, if I would have asked 100 fans how Washington would do in their first five games, I think the majority would have said 2-3. I know that fans are disappointed that the Dawgs have let these last three games slip through their fingers but I think it's unfolded as most expected.
With eight games remaining, I think it's fair to expect nothing less than a .500 record in those games. That would leave the Dawgs with a 6-7 record for the season which would be a minor improvement over last year's 5-win season.
All this begs the question: would 6-7 be considered a successful season for Coach Willingham and the players? I don't think so and I don't think they think it would, either.
Jordan's Jersey
If you've been following the Blawg, you know that I bought Jordan Reffett's #95 game-worn jersey from the USC game in last week's auction on GoHuskies.com. I was proud of how Reffett played against USC. He was a true leader on defense and never quit. He should be commended for his play.
Of course, I bought the jersey for P-I columnist Jim Moore to wear at the end of the season when I triumph in our prediction contest.
However, I wondered today if I might have outbid one of Reffett's family members that may want the jersey as a memento. And, that would mean that I'm keeping a Dawg family member from having a special keepsake so that I can satisfy a meaningless bet. If that's the case, I welcome one of them to contact me and I'll arrange to get the jersey to them.
Dirty Pete
Obviously, USC's 16 penalties had a major effect on Saturday's game. However, there was some question whether USC played "dirty football". I heard some of that after the Ohio State game about the Buckeyes, too.
Of course, most people will use USC CB Shareece Wright's cheapshot hit on UW QB Jake Locker in the first quarter as evidence. And, they will further that point with the fact that the Trojan coaches congratulated Wright even though he received a 15-yard penalty for making the hit out of bounds.
USC went out of their way to hit Locker at every possible opportunity. And, you could make a case that the strategy worked as Offensive Coordinator Tim Lappano said after the game that he thought the hits may have had an effect on Locker's accuracy.
Some people were even surprised that supposedly classy USC Coach Pete Carroll would stoop to such chicanery. It doesn't surprise me one bit. I never thought he was classy and it just seemed like Pete being Pete.
However, the question remains, were they dirty hits? They probably were but so what? they were effective if they really hampered Locker. If Carroll actually told one of his players to nail our young QB with the sheer intentions of intimidating him, he's a genius. The 15-yard penalty is a good trade off for the rattled psyche that might have affected Locker the entire game.
That's just football. You might think that's barbaric but - we aren't playing ping pong - it's a barbaric game. Intimidation and pain are part of the deal, even in the event of an illegal play. Frankly, I'd like to see the Huskies show those qualities more often.
I was actually a little disappointed that Washington didn't retaliate. It's kind of like baseball when a pitcher beans a hitter. A retaliation beaning shows that the team is defending itself.
Let's flip the scenario. If Washington had hit USC QB John David Booty and he had an off night because of those hits and it would have resulted in a UW victory; that would have been fine with me.
Actually, I seem to remember Washington teams of the past hitting hard just to show opposing teams that they were the more physical team and with the intention of intimidating them. I'm guessing that you could even find a play or two where we hit a player late in the act of trying to accomplish that goal.
I know calling Carroll a genius won't be a popular opinion but I think it's the truth if he truly planned it out. If it wasn't planned, it was just a plain'ol cheapshot. Football is a mean game.
Pac-10 Competency Ranking
1. USC 24-hours after the game, I finally extracted the Trojan fight song out of my head. Now, I have that stupid song from the Ipod commercial stuck in my head. Stop the madness.
2. Cal I guess we figured out on Saturday who is truly the second best team in the conference.
3. Oregon Are the Ducks ready for their annual late season implosion?
4a. UCLA I guess that Utah game was a fluke.
4b. Arizona State I toiled whether to put ASU 4th or 5th. I can't stand Dennis Erickson so I put them 5th.
6. Washington The best sub-.500 team in the conference.
7a. Arizona Stoops and the Gang crawl out of the Pac-10 cellar with a 48-20 win over WSU.
7b. Oregon State What is going on in Corvallis? They blow double-digit leads two weeks in a row.
9. Washington State Isn't their head coach also the defensive coordinator?
10. Stanford I just booked my tickets for the UW-Stanford game on November 3rd. Hide the women and children in Palo Alto.
Stat of the Week
1076.
You're probably wondering what the significance of that number is. It's the combined amount of yards the Cougs have surrendered the last two weeks against USC and Arizona. Cougar Coach Bill Doba is in trouble which is too bad because he seems like a great guy.
Quote of the Week
"It's a classic game, when you really mess it up and give up a night. Washington was there to take it; all they needed was one more chance. We were so horrible that it was hard to watch, We almost beat ourselves tonight, we tried really hard." USC Trojan Coach Pete Carroll. I guess Pete left his humility and class at home in LA because, of course, Washington had nothing to do with how his team played.

USC's 160 yards of penalties to Washington's 195 yards of offense should give you some indication as to who was beating who Saturday night--- USC was beating themselves. Washington would have been lucky to have scored 3 points the entire game if not for all the penalties, turnovers and screw ups. So yeah, USC did do it to themselves and Washington had nothing to do with it.
