Darrell Jackson surgery update ...

Darrell Jackson underwent surgery on Wednesday, and two things were discovered during the arthroscopic procedure.

One, the lateral meniscus tear was worse than anticipated. Doctor John Uribe, the renowned orthopedist who performed the surgery, found a large flap of cartilage that had rolled underneath.

Two, there was a second injury found during the surgery, a loose flap of articular cartilage.

Obviously, there's concern since the injury was worse than anticipated, but it is consistent with the pain Jackson was feeling while making cuts. The estimate of a four to six-week recovery period has not been changed though initial indications are it could be more like six weeks as opposed to four.

Coach Mike Holmgren was asked about the surgery. He did not address specifics of the operation.

"They repaired the cartilage, and it went well," he said.

As for the recovery time, Holmgren said it's too early to say.

"I can’t tell you how long it’s going to be," Holmgren said. "Cartilage scopes typically can be two weeks, sometimes it’s longer. So we just have to see how it is."

Jackson will spend the next week in Miami undergoing rehabiliation under Uribe's supervision, and then undergo a post-surgical exam. The estimate is that Jackson will return to Seattle next week.

Jackson caught 29 passes in the first four games, third-most in the league in that time before getting a second opinion on the knee on Friday, which recommended surgery.

Jackson in Florida, Engram staying home ...

After Friday's practice, coach Mike Holmgren made his final comments before Sunday's game.

Darrell Jackson went to Florida for a second opinion on his bruised right knee. Holmgren said it wasn't that there was any question about the diagnosis.

"It’s pretty typical now that guys do that," Holmgren said. "So he just wants to make sure that guy down there sees the same thing we’re seeing."

Jackson has been diagnosed with a bone bruise. Engram has two cracked ribs, and he'll be staying in town.

Joe Jurevicius and D.J. Hackett will start at wide receiver on Sunday with Peter Warrick playing a slot-receiver role.

In other updates, tackle Floyd Womack was absent to attend a funeral after a death in the family. He will be in St. Louis for Sunday's game and will play, said Holmgren, along with Sean Locklear at right tackle. As to who starts, Holmgren said that will be something navigated by feel.

Defensive tackle Marcus Tubbs, who missed practice on Thursday because of a quadriceps injury, was back on the field and is expected to play.

WR Darrell Jackson expected out ...

Darrell Jackson and Bobby Engram -- Seattle's two starting receivers -- are not expected to play this week.

That's not a surprise regarding Engram, who suffered two cracked ribs on the first play of Sunday's game in Washington. Jackson's status was more uncertain, but he has a bone bruise in his right knee. It's not a ligament or cartilage, but it has resulted in swelling and soreness.

"To get this thing to quiet down we all just decided he has to not practice, not play," coach Mike Holmgren. "Otherwise it's one of those nagging things that could get worse if you don't do it."

Holmgren said he wasn't sure when the injury occurred, but it was some time in the first couple of weeks. Holmgren said it likely came when Jackson was trying to plant and make a move and he was hit from behind, compressing the joint.

"The good news is with rest -- I believe and our medical people believe -- he will get better," Holmgren said.

Jackson and Engram were both listed as doubtful on the team's injury report, but neither is expected to play. How much time it will take for Jackson to recover is uncertain.

"I think it's going to be shorter more than longer, talking to Darrell and how he responded last week to it being sore," Holmgren said.

Araguz waived, Tom Rouen returns ...

It's a Wednesday packed with news. The Seahawks have made a change at punter, bringing back Tom Rouen after a tryout yesterday. That means the Seahawks part ways with Leo Araguz, who didn't have a punt longer than 46 yards in either of the past two games. His net punting average was 34.9 yards in the past two games.

Rams' Wednesday update ...

The Rams' had their two conference calls for Seattle reporters on Wednesday morning as wide receiver Torry Holt and coach Mike Martz answered questions from local reporters.

Martz said the Rams will make an announcement today that he has a bacterial infection of his heart valve, which is what has caused the fatigue he has felt over the past few weeks. It's something that should be treatable with antibiotics, and Martz said tests over the next few days will determine what treatment he will get. He won't attend practice either Wednesday or Thursday, but said he expects to be there for the game on Sunday.

Holt talked about his comments regarding mental toughness and the Seahawks while serving as a draft analyst. He didn't say he regretted the comments, but emphasized they won't have any impact this season.

Here was his explanation of what he said: "I was basically saying around that we do have a mental edge against that bunch because we were able to beat them three times in one year. It don't matter if, it could have been Cincinnati, if we beat them three times in one year, you're going to feel you have some type of edge over a partciular squad."

He was asked if that edge will carry over to this season: "I think it's a different year. That was last year, and it's over and done with. This is a different year. Again, I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Seattle Seahawks, and their ball players and that coaching staff and how they get their players to play."
