I'm an unabashed fan of Olympia-based singer/songwriter Kimya Dawson. Unpretentious and just this side of self-effacing, Kimya has a knack for taking the most complex feelings and breaking them down into the most simple of melodies and lyrics, a trait I deeply admire.
Kimya Dawson Loves You, her blog, has been a regular part of my daily blog-reading regimen for several years now. I've followed her reports on pregnancy and transition to being a mom. (Daughter Panda is now a year old.) I've celebrated the birth of her baby and marriage to fellow musician Angelo Spencer, her move from New York to Seattle, her move from Seattle to Olympia and, of course, early mentions of a little indie film called Juno that she had some songs in. Today, that soundtrack is #2 on Billboard - just behind Alicia Keys.
I admit, I got very choked up hearing "Anyone Else But You" played in the film - especially the final scene - wondering if this attention would instantly transform Kimya's entire life. Not that it needed transforming.
Monday. Kimya - more specifically her duo with Adam Green, The Moldy Peaches, performed on The View.
I'm guessing that for awhile at least, Kimya won't be anonymous enough to hold pot luck baby showers at Green Lake the way she used to. But the songs I've loved for years are certainly a secret worth sharing.

I'm a new fan, but she pretty much exemplifies what music should be. Simple, real, and beautiful.
