One of TV's earliest animal advocates was Elly May Clampett of the long running sitcom "The Beverly Hillbillies." From 1962 through 1971 actress Donna Douglas portrayed Elly May as an unlikely millionairess devoted to an array of animals she called her "critters." In addition to the family bloodhound, Duke, Elly May had a talent for attracting wild animals as well as men (and in some cases it was hard to tell the difference!) Luckily being a tomboy she could take care of herself. When not being pursued by glamour guys like "Dash Riprock" and "Bolt Upright" Elly devoted herself to her real love, the critters livin' out by the cement pond. One of her favorites was a chimpanzee named Cousin Bessie who had a higher I.Q. than her human cousin Jethro. The show won 11 emmys and is still popular today in reruns.
