If you're having trouble teaching your dog how to play fetch maybe you should consider getting a goldfish. According to Dr. Dean Pomerlau, goldfish can not only be taught how to play fetch but also basketball, soccer and even do the limbo! A calico fantail fish named Albert Einstein has already mastered several sports and is currently being challenged by a compact competitor named Comet. Ironically, the only thing they can't seem to do is water ballet. Check it out at www.fish-school.com
Congratulations to Kristen T for being the Film Hound contest winner by successfully identifying the Chinese Crested breed in the photo (the suggestion of a Nair mishap also wins bonus points for creativity.) Your knowledge of naked dogs has paid off - CONGRATS!

Move over Captain Picard, there's a new Cap'n onboard and his name is Geo Beach leading the snowy trek up north on a new series called "Tougher in Alaska" premiering tonight on the History channel 10/9 C. He may not be battling aliens but fighting the elements in the punishing Alaskan frontier is to boldly go where no man has gone before, at least when it comes to uncharted TV territory. Tune in tonight to enjoy the adventure. To the hearty men, women and wildlife that inhabit that final frontier may we say: Live long and prosper!
There's more to Betty Boop than meets the eye - in addition to being an animal lover she also used to be an animal! Betty Boop started out cartoon life as a dog. That may account for her oddly shaped head and puppy dog eyes. Her earrings evolved on the drawing board from floppy pup ears and morphed into jewelry later on. Talk about a fashion innovation! Only one Betty-Hound cartoon exists, then animators decided she was cuter as a gal. Her sidekick Pudgy took over the canine role, thus resolving her identity crisis. Seen above in the 1933 toon "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers," Betty switches from tail wagging to hip shaking, getting encouraging support from some animal pals.
May 4 - 10 is "Be Kind to Animals Week" so Film Hound sends the word out to all tiny dogs everywhere to stop bullying your bigger buddies. If you've ever seen a Yorkie or Chihuahua go after gentle giants like Mastiffs or St. Bernards you'll know what I'm talking about. This is also a request for Ren to stop harassing Stimpy, for Tom to take a break from chasing Jerry, and Sylvester to leave Tweety Bird alone. Have a safe and peaceful week.
On Star Trek, outer space was the final frontier but here on planet earth the last American frontier is Alaska. If you want to see what puts the "wild" in wildlife and wilderness check out a new show called "Tougher in Alaska" hosted by Geo Beach (a man whose name is as picturesque as his lifestyle.) In addition to being an award winning writer he's lived in Alaska for 25 years and is well acquainted with all its unique pleasures and perils. He's survived volcanic eruptions and winter crabbing on the Bering Sea among other adventures, so join the trek up north from the safety of your living room when the series premieres on the History channel on Thursday, May 8 at 10/9C. Warm socks optional.
For those who can't get enough of the Kentucky Derby or just enjoy horse racing movies, there are three flicks about the legendary champion, Seabiscuit. The most recent is is the 2003 version based on the Laura Hillenbrand book. There's a 1949 version starring Shirley Temple, notable for the fact that the horse in the movie portraying Seabiscuit is the real life son of Seabiscuit. Topping off the trifecta is a Three Stooges parody called "Even is IOU" about a race horse named "Seabasket." Just another example of the Stooges "horsing" around.
If you enjoy watching Bob Hope and Bing Crosby "monkey" around together in the famous Road pictures, be sure to catch the funniest one of all "The Road to Bali," running this month on TCM. In addition to the usual love triangle with Dorothy Lamour, Bob and Bing find themselves being pursued by an amorous gorilla. And in a strange fantasy sequence Lamour reveals her love for a childhood chum - a Hope faced chimpanzee! With cameo appearances by Bing's brother Bob, Humphrey Bogart, Jane Russell, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, this movie is more fun than a barrell full of monkeys!
One of TV's earliest animal advocates was Elly May Clampett of the long running sitcom "The Beverly Hillbillies." From 1962 through 1971 actress Donna Douglas portrayed Elly May as an unlikely millionairess devoted to an array of animals she called her "critters." In addition to the family bloodhound, Duke, Elly May had a talent for attracting wild animals as well as men (and in some cases it was hard to tell the difference!) Luckily being a tomboy she could take care of herself. When not being pursued by glamour guys like "Dash Riprock" and "Bolt Upright" Elly devoted herself to her real love, the critters livin' out by the cement pond. One of her favorites was a chimpanzee named Cousin Bessie who had a higher I.Q. than her human cousin Jethro. The show won 11 emmys and is still popular today in reruns.
