Wives who earn more than their husbands are reporting stress on the homefront, with 100 percent of women agreeing it hurt their marriages, according to a new survey.
The survey offers the latest signs of challenges that accompany the blurring of gender roles at home and work. At home the balance of earning power continues to shift, with the percentage of wives who earn fatter paychecks than their hubbies rising to about a third of women in 2005, according to BettyConfidential.com, which conducted the survey.
Among surveyed divorced women 66 percent said their breadwinning status destroyed their marriages.
"Our survey reveals that outearning one's husband is a blessing – less financial worries, a sense of pride – but also a curse, creating a greater pull of work versus family and a gap between husband and wife that's difficult to bridge," BettyConfidential.com editor Nicole Christie said in a statement.
"Do you ever wish you were not the breadwinner? 75 percent answered 'yes.'" the website reported.
The survey was anecdotal, though BettyConfidential personnel are quantifying the responses, and should have more results soon.
Launched earlier this year, BettyConfidential.com is a web-based resource for women that strives not to be sappy.

Guess some women are starting to learn why men die at a younger age. The constant pressure to succeed and be the breadwinner. Keeping up with the Jones'. Buying more non-essential crap, instead of working on the emotional/spiritual well being of the family members.
Did buying that new SUV really improve your life ladies, or was it just another one-upmanship thing to separate yourself from your nieghbors and peers?
