Best/worst Push Prize ever

My sister blog, The Poop, is talking about push prizes, the gems and treasure you are supposed to buy your wife after she gives birth. Poop star Peter Hartlaub offers his last push prize, TiVo, and I applaud his bravery. But you knew he was going to get flamed.

But, I have to say, on one level TiVo makes more sense than a diamond bracelet or spa treatment.

I want to know who is buying these Push Prizes and who is taking a pass.

Hey Paul,

I have a nine month old. I opted out of the push prize. To me, it totally cheapens what my wife and I experienced when we gave birth to our son (she agrees by the way).

Full disclosure, though, I did buy her an infinity ring for Christmas 6 months later.

Push prize, i don't think so. It's just so offensive to me.

Babbo here, dad of 2, husband of 1 wonderful wife.

Pass on the push. My wife doesn't dig it.

She wants an air-hockey table!

And, she wants to go to Hawaii.

Go air hockey table!

Just my 2 cents, but if you don't think your wife deserves something special for pushing something the size of a watermelon out of her body (or having it cut out), then that speaks directly to how much you cherish your wife and her contribution to your partnership and your family. We got the TiVo during the pregnancy, because if she was going to be staying home for 3 months, and getting up at all hours to breast feed the baby, it seemed pretty reasonable for her to be able to watch "her shows" rather than whatever crap happened to be on cable at 3 AM. For the first baby I bought her Tiffany emerald earrings; for the second I went into debt and bought an outrageously expensive diamond necklace. She deserved both, and I believe both will be passed on to the next generation as cherished heirlooms--both the kids and my wife will know that I though the gift of my children was worthy of the highest levels of celebration.

And, by the way, your wife if COMPLETELY jealous of my wife's baby bling, don't kid yourself.

Give me a break. It's just a new excuse for marketers to guilt you into buying more junk you can't afford. My wife knows I love her without wearing some gaudy rock for other women to ogle at. We're both disgusted by it. When we want to buy things for each other, we do. Simple as that. Get a life.

"your wife deserves something special for pushing something the size of a watermelon out of her body"

Hello, the prize is what gets pushed out!

This push prize thing makes me sick- it cheapens and materializes the greatest act of love the universe has ever created. It is a sign of a sick, materialistic culture and it is sad. Also, it is classist and elitist. "Tiffany emerald earrings; for the second I... bought an outrageously expensive diamond necklace"- a waste of money on material things that don't benefit the baby in any way. If this is the only way you can express your love for your wife I feel sorry for you (and her). Save the diamonds for your hooker and use the money to take more time off work to help with the newborn. Give me a break!

Oh man, TiVO is a GREAT baby present. Far better than any bling. It's thoughtful, useful and makes life with a new baby a little bit easier. Seriously-kudos for picking something that shows you GET IT (those early am nursing sessions when the 600 club just doesn't cut it, the constant interruptions from toddlers, when all you want in life is to get to watch your 30 minutes of trash TV).
