Toxic Toddler Toothpaste: Toxins in Kid Care Products

If you were worried about the unrelenting stream of toy recalls, you might start fretting about your kid's baby shampoo.

It turns out, there is no required testing of baby and kid soap, shampoos, toothpaste, baby wipes or other personal care products, according to the Washington, D.C.-based Environmental Working Group. Under current law, the Food and Drug Administration doesn't have authority to require cosmetic testing, EWG says, and companies are free to slap "safe" on soaps and other beauty products.

The interest group reports "the average child is exposed through body care products to 27 chemicals a day that have not been found safe for children."

The exposure may be reason for concern because EWG reports a kid's skin is 30 percent thinner than the skin of their parents.

The group recently launched its own Safety Guide to Children's Personal Care Products, where mom and dad can learn what toothpaste, wipes, soap and sunscreens are healthier. Several Bert's Bees products, for example, scored well under the "Better/Best Picks," though I didn't recognize many products on the "Best" list. The site also offers printable product guides and other tips.

The Working Group's other scary findings include:

- "Eighty percent of children's products marked as gently and non-irritating contain ingredients linked to allergies and skin or eye irritation..."

- Every week nearly 70 percent of kids are exposed to ingredients that could disrupt their hormone systems.

Some companies are proactive and test their products, often for allergic reactions, EWG says.

"But, without the regulations there is really no way to enforce anything," said Jovana Ruzicic, a spokeswoman for the Environmental Working Group.

Congress considered legislation last session, but it didn't get far. Advocates hope lawmakers take up the issue later this fall or next year.
