07.07.2007 - A Concert for a Climate in Crisis: Can Al Gore and Cameron Diaz save the world? I hope so.

Here's the thing…
Have you heard yet that Al Gore is trying his darndest to save the planet? An Inconvenient Truth shook a few foundations when it hit the big screens last year. But many global warming naysayers – along with plenty of people turned off by Gore's political affiliations – rejected the science, refused to see the movie, or otherwise buried their heads in the sand. That's OK. It can take some time for a paradigm shift. We can't blame ourselves if we are still a little woozy from our oil-induced slumber. It has been a few decades after all.

But now, it seems, the beast has awoken and global warming has become a hot topic. Soon, because of Al Gore and his new effort to promote a "Live Earth" series of rock concerts, global attention will be paid to global warming. On July 7, 2007, a series of 24-hour rock concerts will be staged on all seven continents to promote global awareness of the climate crisis. Aptly named Save Our Selves (SOS), the campaign promoting the concerts is planning to reach 2 billion people with the message that global warming is the greatest threat to the health and welfare of the planet.

If it takes Cameron Diaz to stand next to Al Gore listening to Snoop Dogg to bring attention to global warming, then I am going to become a big fan of cheesy romantic comedies and 80's rap. I'm not going to ask why it takes Hollywood – an industry based on providing us an escape from reality – to make us look beyond our TVs and think about the real world and how badly we are trashing it. Nope. Not even going to ask that. But I do have huge respect for those who choose to use their influence, however it has been gained, for good and truth.

And besides, the line-up looks pretty good.
