Wikipedia rumor alert: Sasquatch!'s third headliner is The Kinks?

We're just a few days away from the announcement of the Sasquatch! 2008 lineup and the rumor mills are abuzz with guesses for who might be the third headliner for the three-day festival.

The always reliable Wikipedia (I hope you detected the sarcasm there) thinks The Kinks will be headlining the third day. If so that would be amazing, but according to a news report on Billboard.com today, a Kinks reunion might not happen. (Editor's note: The information about the Kinks was removed from Wikipedia shortly after this Ear Candy entry was posted.)

Along with The Kinks, Wikipedia is reporting on a slew of unconfirmed bands that may or may not be playing Sasquatch! Some of those bands include Justice, Metric and Ear Candy favs Schoolyard Heroes.

On another Sasquatch! note, Ozomatli has confirmed they will be making a return trip to the festival this year on the band's Web site. Also, it's highly rumored that the Kooks will be at the fest too. Imagine that, a Kinky, Kooky Sasquatch!

While Wikipedia is likely wrong with its Kinks announcemet, the Sasquatch! message boards have several legitimate guesses for who the third headliner will be (in case you haven't been following things as closely as Ear Candy, two of the headliners will be The Cure and R.E.M.). Here's a look at who the message boards think will be there with some analysis by Ear Candy thrown in.

Pearl Jam (or Eddie Vedder solo): It's no secret that Pearl Jam loves the Gorge, so why not headline the best hometown festival. Eddie is playing a string of dates to support his solo record, so it is also possible Eddie could headline a second stage one night and have PJ play the festival-closing set the next night. Add in the fact that the band is headlining Bonnaroo and Pearl Jam looks likely, so it's definitely possible and if it happens Ear Candy would be elated to see Pearl Jam at the Gorge again.

Neil Young: Neil Young was tossed around the Coachella message boards a while back and he sort of makes sense if you take into account that the other two headliners – R.E.M. and The Cure – are rock icons. But Neil Young isn't touring and an announcement that he is headlining Sasquatch! would seem to be a bit out of left field.

Weezer: The almighty Weez have a new record coming out in April so a tour is sure to follow. The band has a loyal fan following and they would drive ticket sales, but =W= seems a little too mainstream pop-rock for Sasquatch!

Rage Against the Machine: Rage is heading out the Europe later this summer, so a possible stop at the Gorge could happen before they leave the country. Also, consider the band has yet to make a Washington state appearance since its reunion and a Sasquatch! set seems plausible. However, Rage headlined Coachella last year and Sasquatch! might not want to pick up Indio's leftovers. Plus, Rage ran into some resistance from law enforcement last time they performed in Grant County back in 1997, so RATM performing at the Gorge doesn't seem likely.

Stone Temple Pilots: This would make for a pretty rocking headliner (although so would Rage). The reunited STP is already confirmed to play a festival in Ohio, so they're on the reunion tour road and that road includes at least one stop at a festival.

Death Cab or Modest Mouse: This is likely, considering MM is touring with R.E.M. and DCFC has a new record out in May. However, it wouldn't be too much of a big splash in the festival circuit and with Sasquatch!'s expansion to three days again it appears as if Live Nation wants to make some noise by having a noteworthy festival-closing headliner.

Portishead: They're back and getting tons of buzz. A spot on this year's Coachella seemed to make the hipsters happy, but would they fit in at a festival like Sasquatch! that isn't known for focusing on dance music alongside mainstream indie and rock music?

So those are the popular guesses about who will be headlining Sasquatch! Now that other people's guesses have been put on the record, who do you think will be the third headliner?

The lineup for the 2008 Sasquatch! Music Festival will be released Feb. 25.

It's probably gonna be the Smashing Pumpkins

Kooks would be fun, any possibility of Vampire Weekend? That album is great and a live show could be fun to watch especially if they could get some of the strings that they have on the album. STP and RAM? bad flashbacks to mid 90's Lollapalooza. Then again, I guess PJ would be that also.

The Pumpkins are a band I hadn't heard yet, but wouldn't surprise me. I'm one of the pushers for Pearl Jam, they'd be a perfect closer.

Any confirmation on the Schoolyard Heroes? I never get sick of seeing them live

Just posted over on the other board- but Travis, have you heard anything about the postal service or sufjan stevens? they're both names I haven't heard much on this year, but hoping either would make it out.

Both are possibilities, but I don't see them as big name headliners that close out a day of the festival. I think a hadliner would have to be someone that would attract a large crowd to the Gorge all by itself, and while Sufjan and The Postal Service are great performers, I don't see 20,000 people trekking to the Gorge just to see them perform. I'd add both of them to the growing list of possible performers for Sasquatch!

I agree with Travis and here are a couple more thoughts: The Postal Service played, but didn't headline in 2004 and that was the smallest crowd ever at Sasquatch! I think it may have had around 10,000 (I actually kind of liked the smaller crowd/bands) and the Postal Service were probably more popular at the time since they put out their album in 2003 and haven't put out one since. They are working on an album that it is suppose to come out later this year, but I bet early 2009, I guess we'll see. Having said that, they were awesome and if they did play it would be very welcomed, but I think it is Death Cab's year, plus Chris Walla put out an album too, I'm hoping he'll play a set.

Sufjan played in 2006 and I think it was kind of a weird setting for his music, but he would be great to close out the Wookie stage. I guess we'll know tomorrow! Personally I think Sasquatch! is more about the supporting bands than the headliners, there are so many discoveries each year! See everyone there!

Of course, if Walla is playing a show, it's not out of the realm of possibility for Ben to play with the Postal Service for a set. I doubt we'd get all three though.

Portishead is not "dance" music.

After the fiasco that was last years sasquatch (bad light rigging holding up the show for hours, cold temperatures, and terrible lines to get in) it would take something amazing like Portishead to get me to go.

yeah, because freak wind and cold temperatures are the organizers fault...

Maybe it can't be announced this early, cuz the band hasn't been formed yet ...
