Ear Candy with Travis Hay
Ear Candy is Travis Hay's one-stop destination for opinionated and informed musing about all things music, ranging from noteworthy news bits about the local scene to rants about how the national music media gets more things wrong than it does right.

Just a reminder that before you head east to Sasquatch! you should head on over to the High Dive to celebrate the spirit of Sasquatch! at Ear Candy's Sasquatch! Prefunk.

Six bands. Eight bucks. It is gonna be an awesome night of some killer local music that you really should check out.

In case you're curious. Ear Candy makes no money off this show. After a small bit of money goes to the venue, all of the money goes to the bands, so you'll be supporting the local music community in a good way.

So come on down and party with Ear Candy. I'd love to see you there!

Paramore will be at Bumbershoot 2008. Photo from Ear Candy's Flickr page

I got a BShoot email update last night that told me The All-American Rejects, Paramore, Band of Horses, The Black Keys, Sons & Daughters and Estelle have been added to the Bumbershoot lineup.

Ear Candy agrees with reader universalguru who suggested yesterday that a headlining night of Band of Horses, Black Keys and Beck would be fitting.

Since realistically there is a chance EC's Rage and Prince rumor may not happen, could you please, please, please make that headlining night of Band of Horses, Black Keys and Beck happen OneReel. Please, please, please.

From Bumbershoot's Web site:

We regret to inform that Ludacris has had to cancel his performance as previously announced.

No more Luda? Hmm ... Maybe BShoot is making room for Prince and/or Rage Against the Machine?

Recently Ear Candy posted the news that Billboard let it slip that Prince and Rage Against the Machine will be headlining Bumbershoot 2008. Shortly after EC caught Billboard's mistake, Billboard has removed its original post.

Ear Candy's bloggers-in-arms over at Metroblogging Seattle poo-pooed the idea that the two acts would be headlining the annual Labor Day weekend festival.

I am a realist and I do recognize that this rumor is just that, a rumor (hence why the blog post had a headline of "RUMOR ALERT" in all caps), which means it likely won't happen.

However, if the rumor is true this would be a major coup for Bumbershoot and catapult it to being the premiere summer festival.

Ear Candy thinks someone at Billboard accidentally let the cat out of the bag about the Rage and Prince additions to BShoot. So I say keep your hope alive because this is something that still could happen and here's the rationale behind how RATM/Prince could actually headline Bumbershoot:

OneReel has an agreement with AEG Live to co-produce Bumbershoot. The deal was set up in 2007 with the thought that AEG Live would help bring in big name headliners. Why can AEG Live help OneReel nab big headliners? Well, AEG Live also happens to co-produce Coachella with Goldenvoice.

Both Prince and Rage recently headlined Coachella,. which means there is a possible connection between them and BumbershootTypically a Coachella headlining spot equals a big tour later the same year (ex: Rage, Pixies) and Prince just headlined this year's Coachella making him prime for a national tour. Also, Rage has mysteriously skipped Seattle on its ongoing reunion tour thus far.

Throw in the fact that Metroblogging isn't citing anyone from OneReel or Billboard denying the rumor of Rage and Prince. Metroblogging simply headlined a post that said Billboard made an error, and as typical with blogs (myself included sometimes) no source was cited..

Add in that Billboard never actually admitted it made an error or posted a retraction, they just rewrote their BShoot description and took Prince and Rage off the original listing, and there's a good chance the Purple One and Rage could be at BShoot.

Oh, one more interesting fact: Anti-Flag is slated for Bumbershoot this year. Why is that important? Well, Anti-Flag recently announced they will be touring with Rage later this summer. Could be a coincidence, but it's still noteworthy.

So Ear Candy isn't saying I've bought the rumor about Rage and Prince being at Bumbershoot hook, line and sinker because like everyone else I will belive it when I see it. But I am saying it's highly possible.

From Blabbermouth:

"Dear METALLICA,

"Hey, it's Dave! Remember me? Yeah, I'm the guy that's been listening to your band faithfully since 1983. I bought your first album 'Kill 'Em All' from a mailorder catalogue called Under The Rainbow, I think. Actually I can't remember. It was 1983 for Christsakes! But that album changed my life and I've been listening to your albums ever since (even 'St Anger'!).

"I can't wait to hear the new sh*t, and no matter what you guys do I'll always be first one at the shop waiting to hear it. I'm sure you'll come out and blow everybody's f*ckin' minds, because you're f*ckin' METALLICA!

"Good luck. And don't release it until it's kick-ass.

"Yours, Dave Grohl.

"P.S. Are you finished recording the drums yet?"

According to Billboard, Prince and Rage Against the Machine will be headlining Bumbershoot along with the already listed Beck, Stone Temple Pilots, Ludacris and others.

If this is true, this year's Bumbershoot could be the best Bumbershoot ever.

Here's the scoop from Billboard.com:

BUMBERSHOOT

Seattle Center, Seattle
Lineup Includes: Prince, Beck, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against the Machine, Neko Case, Lucinda Williams

you're walking through the Roman art exhibit at SAM and keep reading about Osiris expecting there to be a Wu-tang symbol etched in marble somewhere.

Yup, that's what it's like inside my head.

Those who read the comments posted to my blog may have noticed that loyal reader Dustin tipped Ear Candy to the news that the Vaselines, Les Thug and Eric's Trip have been added to the Sub Pop festival.

Ear Candy's friends over at three imaginary girls confirmed that this is indeed true. This will be the Vaselines first U.S. show.

The Vaselines ... WOW!

*btw, thanks for the tip Dustin and thanks tig for doing the dirty work. ;)

Devotchka, a band Ear Candy know very little about (although I am enjoying what I am listening to on their MySpace page right now) has been announced as the headliner for the July 26 Cap. Hill Block Party date.

EC assumes they will take the main stage after the Hold Steady performs, although I'm keeping my fingers crossed that THS will play inside of Neumos because they would sound so much better inside of a packed club than rocking a main stage outdoors.

In other Block Party news, locals Thee Emergency, Voyager One and Zeke (yes, ZEKE!!!!) have also been added to the two-day fest along with Grand Ole Party and a slew of other bands.

Who are those other bands? Well, they are: Natalie Portman's Shaved Head, Feral Children, Sleepy Eyes Of Death, Truckasaurus, Black Elk, New Faces, and Angelo Spencer.
