Video Game NPD April Sales Data Analyzed: Exclusive Grand Theft Auto IV Pie Chart!!

Yesterday the NPD sales numbers for April came out. It had pretty good news for Microsoft, OK news for Sony and freaking totally awesome news for Nintendo. NPD tracks videogame sales and new system sales in the US for April were:

1. Wii - 714,200
2. Nintendo DS - 414,800
3. PSP - 192,000
4. Xbox 360 - 188,000
5. PlayStation 3 - 187,100
6. PlayStation 2 - 124,400

Nintendo sold more Wiis in the US in April than Xbox 360 and PS3s sold in the same time combined. Hopefully this means that the great Wii system shortage is finally over. The Nintendo DS also outsold both the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined for new systems, and the PSP outsold both the PS3 and 360.

Nintendo has sold 9.5 million Wii systems in the United States.
Microsoft has sold roughly 10 million Xbox 360s in the US.
Microsoft has a slight lead in the US but Nintendo has sold more Wiis worldwide.
Nintendo said they sold 714,000 Wii systems in the US in April.
Microsoft says sold 188,000 Xbox 360s in April and Sony sold 187,100 Playstation 3s in the US last month.

Microsoft just barley outsold Sony for new game systems, but the Xbox 360 has a larger installed user base. Strangely the release of Grand Theft Auto IV did not really affect new system sales that much.

Xbox 360 owners picked up 1.85 million copies of GTA IV for Xbox 360 while the PS3 version sold a solid 1 million. 65% of GTA IV sales were on the Xbox 360 and 35% on the PS3. So the Xbox 360 version almost outsold the PS3 version close to two to one.

LOL GTA IV
