Xbox 360 "Newton" Motion Sensing Controller Confirmed

I can now confirm the existence of the Xbox Wiimote clone project and I can tell you the project code name : "Newton"

The "Newton" controller's code name is after the physicist Sir Isaac Newton. The internal Microsoft engineering code name is for this controller is "Newton" as in Newtonian Physics relating to gravity, inertia and acceleration. This is not to be confused with the defunct Apple Newton PDA, this is just and internal name, when this controller comes to market it will have a retail name.

The hardware is still being worked on and it might be a couple months before we see leaked shots of prototypes when they start to mass manufacture it but I am sure that there is an early software developer kit and prototype out there.

Wiimote Play And Charge Kit Xbox Controller

Nintendo is not the first company to make something like the Wiimote. The concept for the Wiimote has been called a 3d Mouse or a "Flying Mouse". There is a company called Gyration that makes wireless controllers and is an early innovator in these kind of controllers. Gyration owns a lot of applicable patents for motion-sensing controllers and in 2001 Nintendo hired the company to help them design a motion sensing one handed controller that eventually became the Wiimote.

Nintendo is an investor in Gyration but they don't own it. In 2001 Nintendo licensed patents from Gyration and used it to develop the Wii. They are US application patents 5898421 and 5440326 which are about a device tracking human motion and translating it into linear movement of computer graphic images. So Nintendo does not wholly own all the patents involved in the Wiimote.

Take a look at the awesome infomercial for Gyration's wireless mouse.

Microsoft is rumored to have licensed patents from Gyration and are using them to develop their motion sensing Wiimote controller. Legally Microsoft is not ripping off Nintendo but rather licensing the technology from the same place that Nintendo got it. For an example the Guitar Hero and Rockband controllers both use the same patent that is owned by Konami that they developed for Guitar Freaks.

Back in January there was a notice for a job at Microsoft for a hardware test engineer that drops some big tips about the "Newton" project.

From what I've learned from internal sources at Microsoft I can corroborate that the Newton project is moving forward and I can believe the time table that it has been in development for a while now and they could get it on the market by winter of 2008. The Newton is also going to use an LED sensor bar that can be powered by the USB ports on the 360, it is going to have an LED sensor on the front accelerometer and gyroscope sensor that can detect tilt and motion, rumble motors, wireless two way data communication with the 360, a built in Microphone for Xbox Live and voice-activated games.

If you cross the Gyration patents with Gyration existing product line, the Wiimote and the Job posting for a hardware test engineer, the reports about Rare (a Microsoft owned game studio) working on a XBLA game, The MTV report and my internal sources I can make some well informed estimation about the "Newton" controller

I have a good feeling that it might retail for 50 or 40 around the same price as a Wiimote and it might come with a 5 by 5 download code for the Conkers : Fast and the Furriest Xbox Live arcade game as a "Pack In" that can be downloaded after buying the stick much like how a code for Uno came with the Xbox Live Vision camera.

I have a feeling that there already is a clue about the final design of the "Newton" controller on the market right now and millions of Xbox gamers literally have it in their hands. I have a good feeling that the Xbox Play & Charge battery pack is going to fit on the bottom of the "Newton" controller. That would mean that it is going to be curved, about and inch wide and powered by two AA batteries or an equivalently recharge kit. The Xbox Wireless Racing wheel also can use the Play & Charge kit and was developed by the same division. They also have chargers and multiple product SKUs that use this battery pack.

I have a feeling that the "Newton" is likely to come in multiple colors such as white (chill), Black and Pink like the Play & Charge battery packs. There is a white Xbox on the market, and a Black one and a pink colored "Newton" controller would appeal to younger female gamers. That is a gaming market that Nintendo has with the Wii and DS and Microsoft would love to have play Xbox 360.

The Newton controller is going to have to small LED transmitters in a bar that you place next to your TV to triangulate the position of the remote by the LED sensor on the controller. The Big Button controllers that come with Sceen It! use an LED receiver that plugs into the USB ports. They also better get around to making a Xbox brand USB hub. Some of the original designs of the Xbox 360 had four USB ports in front and with all the Xbox accessories that use the USB ports would benefit from more available ports.

By making this controller Microsoft will be able to take away an exclusive feature that makes people want to buy a Nintendo Wii for around the cost of a standard wireless controller. If they bring an external Blu-Ray movie player they would take away one of the biggest reasons why current or potential Xbox owners would want to get a Playstation 3.

This controller would allow game developers to port Wii games to the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade platforms. I would love to see games like Zak and Wiki on Xbox 360. Heck I would pay real money for graphical adventure games on Xbox Live Arcade.

Microsoft wants to make the Xbox 360 appeal to Kids, girls, causal gamers and they want their current customer base to go out and buy yet another controller. If they bring out a controller like the Newton and lower the price of the Xbox 360 again it would be a tough blow to Nintendo. They want to beat Nintendo and Sony and they are willing to do anything to do that.

If we don't see this "Newton" Xbox controller by the end of the year I'll give my Wii to charity.

Its an obvious copy on the Wii but M$ have never really worried over copying or monoplies and have always seemed to either buy out or infinge the other company to death..

I liked the wii mote but ending up selling my wii because the graphics were too last gen.. I am sorry after Mario & SSB were released but I spend so much time playing FPS I don't mind too much..

I own a 360 and a PS3 am a 33 year old gamer and just want to play games.. no fanboy.. a Wiimote for both the PS3 & 360 would be great clones.. Ok Nintendo thought it up first.. the other would have to eat humble pie for a few months and then watch the money roll in.. lets see how they Spin that shall we..

It will be a novelty, that's all. The Wii already has the install base and the only good games on there are made by Nintendo so you wont be seeing them on the 360. I think a huge majority of people will stick with what they know (they are casual after all) and buy a Wii instead. They will want to play with their mates who also have Wiis. I think 360 owners who cant afford to buy a Wii will buy the remote but there wont be many more people choosing to buy the 360 thanks to this. Xbox could be facing an identity crisis. "Casual or Hardcore? Oh wth i'll buy a PS3"

Why is it that everyone uses the M$ symbol. Does EVERYONE in America not realise the "Monopoly" that Sony has in its corner? They have "PURCHASED" MANY American Music Companies, Movie Studios, and Electronic Companies to put themselves in such a position of power that they have the capitol to "WOO" (AKA,BUY the loyalties of..) the few companies, AKA movie studios, to their BluRay format and to abandon HD DVD, that they can topple such companies an Toshiba and Microsoft in the format war for the next movie format?
They manufacture the hardware, They own the rights to the software - Both on the creative (Movies, Music)AND the hardware (TV, BluRay)end. Their purchase power has been their real show of force, Not their ability to innovate.
God forbid Ammericans open their eyes or should show any alegience to an American owned company.

I agree with who ever this person is. I dont think no one noticed the price raise of Blue Ray & what Sony is doing in most of the Industry. But its funny how everyone noticed MS trying to buy Yahoo, & supposedly that would be bad??? This is America, not Asia people. Sony is not an American Company. Heheheheheheh oh wait we have a lot of Asians where I live. Oh, that explains it then.

You must be misinformed. . . Blu-ray consumer electronic companies are all members of the BDA. "The Blu-ray Disc format [by definition] was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers, with more than 180 member companies from all over the world." Sony is simply a member of the BDA board of directors and by no means do they receive all revenue from the Blu-ray Disc format, each company has it's own share of profits depending on what they contributed to the format. Sony plays a large role in the development and manufacturing of their own players and hardware but they do not have a monopoly over the format itself.

As for the Blu-ray software, it was developed by Java, just as HDi menu system (software) was developed by Microsoft for HD DVD. In other words, Blu-ray had to pay fees to use Java, just as HD DVD had to pay for HDi (Java wants their cut, as does Microsoft). On another note, it's pointless to argue about monopolies in todays day and age. It's all up for debate; put yourself in their shoes. They are in the business to make money, satisfying executives, and share holders. That's simply what they do, in a sense, it's business's idea of moving forward. GE does it, Microsoft does it, Google does it, why not Sony? They all go into the category of (up for debate) monopoly.

On the other hand, Toshiba, Intel, and Microsoft, were the major backers of HD DVD. Toshiba and Intel made the hardware, and Microsoft the software respectively. Toshiba was the only significant HD DVD hardware manufacture, namely because Toshiba marketed their players at such a low price they lost vast amounts of money on each player, in order to play catch up, among other reasons. In turn, causing other CE company's to turn to Blu-ray, where the money was at; they had profit margins, unlike their competitor. It's all about the money, to each side its own strategy. . .

I will write more tonight. Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony are multinational corporations that do extensive manufacturing in China but have developers all over the world. They are not really all "American" or "Japanese". Take the Boeing 787 plane for example. It is assembled in Washington state but the parts were designed and manufactured all over the world. The Xbox, Wii and PS3 are alot like that.

It's not a copy of the Wii, it's just the same technology.
To be a copy of the Wii, the XBOX 360 would need XBOX 1 graphics and a built in 512 Mb HDD to replace any external storage solution.

...Its the same logic people (traitors) use when they buy foreign automobiles at the expense of the American workers and our economy....

Traitors?
Tora! Tora! Tora!

Americans cannot build good cars for the middle class. Americans can build trucks, from a Ford F-150 to a Ford 9000 sized truck, but that's about it.

Speaking of our great economy, what's the best brand of American made HDTVs?

Microsoft had an IPO years ago and will sell their shares to anybody in the world with the money to buy them. Same with Nintendo and Sony.

Sure Nintendo has their global HQ in Kyoto, Sony in Tokyo and Microsoft in Redmond but they are all world wide corporate entities. Especially when you throw over reaching multinational trade deals like the WTO in the mix that can overpower the jurisdiction of local governments in favor of multinational corporations.

Last time I check Ford and Chevy made a lot of cars in Mexico and Canada using parts from China while Toyota makes cars in the US. I am more a reader of Noam Chomsky and William Gibson than Thomas Freidman but when your are talking about corporations in the 21st century it is a lot more complicated than saying it is "US vs Them". It is not as simple as that.

Guess where Microsoft has the Xbox manufactured? Mainland China, Taiwan and Singapore. The system is designed by teams in Redmond and California and the profits are dispersed globally to anyone that owns a share of Microsoft.

I love the 360, AND I have a Wii. Honestly, the novelty of the Wii's controls wore off as soon as I got into some really good games on the 360. It's not about the controller, it's about the games...and how seamlessly the controller integrates into the game. With too many Wii titles, I felt like the controller wasn't responsive enough and often led to errors.

If MS can perfect what Nintendo has started, I'll give it a try. But I think this technology needs to mature a bit...

I had the choice of playing Tomb Raider Anniversary on either console, but I chose the 360 over the Wii...I'd rather stick with standard controls instead of flailing my arms around while standing in the middle of the floor...telling people not to walk between me and the TV.

My xbox 360 was re-manufactured 4 times in Mexico.

Last time it came back with temporary work visa because it will only work for a short time in the US and then have to go back to mexico...

Microsoft is obviously trying to ripoff Nintendo's idea to cash in on it. I think it will fail. Anyone who wants this kind of controller will go for a Wii because the library of games is already large and popular.

Microsoft needs to take some ideas from Nintendo, but not this one. One thing that Microsoft can learn from Nintendo is how to have incredibly low failure rates. With the Wii, you can play 20 hours a day, 365 days a year and it'll be fine. Leave your 360 on too long or put it in a cabinet, and you have incredulous amounts of heat and 3 blinking red lights.

If Microsoft utilizes Newton as little as they have the Xbox Vision camara, this will be more a cosmetic than substantive accessory. If, however, they put nearly as much effort into it as they have working with game publishers and streamlining the online experience, Newton could be a significant addition.

Microsoft Gaming Studies couldn't hope to compete with Wii powerhouses like Mario and Super Smash Bros., but with a little work they could certainly produce (and encourage other studios to produce) higher quality gyration games than the plethora of crappy games clogging Nintendo game racks. That would be something: Quality motion-sensitive games, fully integrated into Xbox Live, broadcast in HD glory.

From what I've learned from internal sources at Microsoft I can collaborate that the Newton project...

M$ is playing catch up and has two very big hurdles to get over. First, the Wii has become a pop-culture icon not unlike the iPod. Ask anyone, gamer or not, about the Wii and they know what it is and what it does. Ask the same people about the 360 and how do you think the response will compare?

Second, the world's most successful game publisher is Nintendo and you won't see their games on anyone else's console anytime soon. That casual audience is no longer up for grabs and with so many Wii systems in homes already who's going to go out and buy another more expensive system to play the same kinds of games they are already playing? Sure current 360 owners will probably give this a spin, but the idea that this is going to draw people away from Nintendo seems weak to me.

In my opinion the 360 is going to have a rough year. The PS3 is gaining in popularity and Nintendo is widening the margin. Plus, the other two companies have successful handheld systems to go along with them. I don't think this controller is going to have any more impact than the Dual Shock 3.

Yeah that is the thing with companies… they are out to make money. Last time I checked Microsoft was not a non-profit and they had a responsibility to their share holders to do everything in their power to make a profit.
