Biggest Videogame Disappointments of 2007

1. Grand Theft Auto IV pushed back until sometime in 2008

2. Sony's online Playstation Home for the PS3 is no where to be seen. It is supposed to be a competitor for Xbox Live and sort of a Second Life like MMORPG

3. The new Sonic The Hedgehog on Xbox 360/PS3 is a unplayable, rushed mess and a major disappointment

4. Only a small handful of Wii games have online gameplay.

5. The Nintendo Wii still has major supply problems, I can't believe that the Wii is over a year old and people were still scalping it before Christmas for over $700.

6. Wii Virtual Console storage problems are still there.

7. Neo Geo Wii virtual console games still don't freaking work at all on my TV.

8. Guitar Hero III on the Wii only plays sound in dual-mono and a replacement program is due soon.

9. The guitar controller compatibility wars and hardware problems for Rock Band and Guitar Hero III.

10. Sony originally axes hardware based backwards compatibility in the PS3 and then all PS2 backwards compatibility in the PS3.

11. Sony puts rumble back into the PS3 gamepad but they are not bundling it with the PS3. Huh?

12. Lair for PS3 is completely unplayable. Seriously this game was supposed to be the savior of the PS3 this holiday season since GTA IV was pushed back.

13. PS3 software development woes. Game developers are starting to become vocal about their developmental difficulty on the PS3 development kits requiring a lot more effort than the Xbox 360 kits. Heavenly Sword failed to be impressive, Ratchet and Clank is pretty much the only PS3 exclusive game that I would consider playing right about now. Final Fantasy XIII, Metal Gear 4, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet are all no where to be seen and are supposed to be out in 2008. GTA IV, Assassin's Creed, Virtua Fighter 5, All the EA sports games, Street Fighter IV and Devil May Cry 4 are going to be on the Xbox 360 as well. Ninja Gaiden 2 and the GTA IV DLC chapters are both Xbox 360 exclusive. Seriously the amount of exclusive games on the PS3 that really would made me want to get one are simply not there in 2007.

14. The Xbox 360 120 Gig hard drive is still $179, Damn..

15. There are still Xbox 360 dying with the Red Ring of Death but luckily I have never had it, There is an extended warrantee and a new hardware revision out there but there is still a chance that my Xbox 360 is going to up and die the next time I turn it on to play some Eternal Sonata.

Update : On my blog 8bitjoystick.com I am more tolerant of swearing but here this a Seattle PI reader blog and you can't swear here. On this site I can't edit your comments and take swearing out of them so I have to delete comments with swearing in them regardless of if you are making a decent point. So don't swear so I won't have to pull your comment. It's not in my hands since I am not the ultimate editor and publisher here.

Now on to Lair.

Instead of patching the game they had a patch for the PS3 OS just for Lair and from what I've read it didn't do very much to improve the control problems. It's not just the controls on that game that a hoot but the PR effort that Sony made about how reviewers didn't really understand how to play the game and that was the reason why the scores for Lair was so low. They sort of had a "Huh.. Everyone else loves the controls it must be a problem with you" attitude. It's too bad because Factor 5 has made some incredible games in the past.

I think my criticisms of how Sony did with the PS3 in 2007 are valid and I am a bit disappointed with them. I didn't write anything here on this article that others people on other blogs have not gone over. If you have a PS3 and you like it than that is awesome but they have a ways to go before they sell me on the platform. For the record I like Sony, I love my PSOne, PS2 and PSP and I hope that they turn things around for the PS3 while they still have time. If I had to summarize my thoughts about the PS3 up until this point into one word it would be "disappointment".

Wow such venom and animosity from you two. I don't have to be a rocket scientist to guess your both ps fans.

Guess there is some truth to the article to bring such cries.

They had a patch that fixed Lair's problems.

Or so I heard...

Its not about being a PS3 fan or not ... wot matters is the truth, constantly i've seen people complaining on PS3 without knowing the actual situation.

This reminds me of the "my commodore is better than your speccy" playground arguments of old!!!.... great :-) ... its all down to peronal preference at the end of the day... I find that the Wii is good for visitors and a 'same room' multiplayer experience, the xbox is excellent for first person shooter on-line experiences (bought one because ofthe increasing expense of upgrading the PC each time I played a game!) and the PS3 is a cheap blue ray player :-p.

I am both PS3 and Xbox Fan, what has been said is truthful to some certain extent, depends on point of view. However, PS3 have already made much stride and many games have came out since the last 5-6 months of 2007, PS3 cannot be compare to Xbox 360 or etc. The power of the games in PS3 cannot be easily ported to Xbox 360 machine due to hardware limitation, unless you want a watered down version.

To each his own. Among all the exclusives, R&C is the only must-have PS3 exclusive for me and there really aren't any for 360 (had to get Bioshock on PC though). Both systems have other good exclusives but nothing I'm dying to play. Several must-have cross platform titles (Rock Band).

#80623

Posted by unregistered user at 1/2/08 6:42 a.m.

PS3 is not a disappointment, not even home. Sure home is not even out yet but i think i would rather wait to the best out of it. PS3 has games and has nice exclusives. IM also sure that PS3 has more then what xbox had in its first year. PS3 has games like warhawk, ratchet, uncharted, heavenly sword, resistance, motorstorm, i could go on for ever and those are the games that came out in PS3 first year. Now xbox 360 first year. PGR 3, Forza 2, Perfect zero, saint row(2 is coming to PS3), and Geometry Wars. Those are the games that were xbox exclusives and most of them werent so good. Saint row was a copy of grandtheft auto. perfect zero was pretty but is a dissapointment. some of the exclusive were only exclusives becasue the other console where not out yet.even Saint row was soppost to come to PS3 but the cancelled it becasue saints row 2 was in development. If u look at PS3 has way more exclusive in its first year and will own 2008 and just continue. xbox exclusive year was 2007. 2008 PS3 still has a lot to offer even 2007 wich people called a crap year for PS3 but remeber, this is its first year going to is second.

#80626

Posted by unregistered user at 1/2/08 6:53 a.m.

I think in general the ps3 was the biggest dissapointment of 2006, and now 2007. Probably 2008 as well.

#80630

Yea, Rule #1, never trust anything with a Microsoft Logo on it. Rule #2, no one should count out the PS3 yet. The storage for Bluray is one factor everyone overlooks. Heavenly Sword 7.1 Audio track alone was 11Gigs. Can that fit on an Xbox 360 4.7gig DVD? No, nor will it for the next 5 years as Sony comes out with games that wouldn't work for 360. Yea, this article is definitely not reflective of the real situation.

#80631

Posted by unregistered user at 1/2/08 7:11 a.m.

Its simple. PS3 simply sucks - by its software not by its hardware. Get it????

#80634

Posted by unregistered user at 1/2/08 7:25 a.m.

Comparing Blu-Ray to DVD? Geez just compare it to 8 track.

BTW

- XBOX already has a hd-dvd drive as an addon, a much better comparison.

- Also to the guy that listed the ps3/xbox exclusive titles. You forgot Halo 3 which is a monster of a title.

- finally to the rest of ya....I agree with the gut that said "chevy is better than ford". get a clue people and a life, It just entertainment.

YOU IDIOTS! This is the stupidest thing ive read on videogames yet (except from what I read from the times), The PS3 is amazing, and if you think R&C is the only PS3 exclusive, you are retarded. seriousley, DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU SAY THINGS YOU DONT KNOW! I bet you dont even have a PS3.

Why?

#80644

Posted by unregistered user at 1/2/08 7:44 a.m.

I just think people should know the truth about the PS3. Sure it's expensive, but by the time you've bought a second controller for the Wii, and a solid gold and jewel encrusted chalice, the price advantage disappears.

Obviously none of you has ever owned a PS3, because I'm right and all of you suck.

#80645

Posted by unregistered user at 1/2/08 7:49 a.m.

first of the idiot that said dvd is 4.7 i guess he never heard of dual layer. still not enough to match blue ray but please know your facts before you open your mouth. you know its funny i say an article in sony's own magizine and it even said that they were pretty much the same depends on what you want. me i have all 3 and from what i see if you want alot of game choice and the best online expierence go with xbox 360. also for the stupid flaws that they have all warrenties were extended 3 years. if you want a game system that is good with people around and to get you moving the wii. (great for kids too) and if you want to have blue ray and a few games then get the ps3. xbox in my opinion is def doing better. ps3 needs to step up alot more with more games in order to compare to xbox right now. will they do it..... i think so but not anytime soon. oh and chevy with out a doubt.

#80656

dont mean to sound rude but....
Why would i want a ps3? same generic crap as yesteryear. how can people moan about the direction the wii has gonE when its worked out mostly better for all?

They increase their demographic like never befor, gaining more cash which inturn is put into to production that out usually out classes the norm were used to seeing on the two more powerful machine that butt heads for the same market.

Nintendo push boundries and take risks, with a quality over quantaty ethos that brought them where they are now. being the under dog sins the 16 bit era ended cant have been easy, so they do something about it and people hate nintendo more.

Sony and teir fans can stick to their own believing they are moving forward. Xbox made quite a name for itself, but underneath MS is just greedy. Nintendo has moved up from a small simple cult status and yeah they are still kiddie in most places, but that fact alone has unfortately caused the majority of gamers to turn their head away from an experience they will never know.

ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY, BUT WHICH OF THESE THREE COMPANIES DO YOU MOST BELIEVE TO HAVE THE GAMERS INTEREST AT HEART?

Seems to be more problems with PS3 and Wii than with the 360. How ever there seemed to be alot of problems with xbox after Christmas but i guess that is to be expected since ps3 sucks and there are no wii available, so 70,000 people with thier new xbox 360's probably would cause some problems.

look, all 3 consoles will fail big time because people dont care about graphics. they care about the cheapest console with the most games. thats why we all keep playing our super nes and all the ton of games there are for it! therefore the 360 sucks, the ps3 sucks & the wii suck...

#80676

Posted by unregistered user at 1/2/08 10:06 a.m.

I owned a PS1. When I was trying to decide between PS2 and original Xbox, I went with PS2 because of price, reliability and variety of games.
When it came time to choose between PS3 and Xbox360, it took longer, but I went with PS3 because they hadn't let me down so far.
I have to say, I haven't been disappointed. The PS3 mostly meets or exceeds my expectations. I'll never know exactly how it compares to Xbox, and I know the titles have been slow coming out, but when GTA 4, Gran Turismo5 and FF 13 come out, I'll never look back. And what's the beef about backwards compatibility? I've been able to play all of my favorite PS2 titles on the PS3 with zero issues.

#80678

Posted by unregistered user at 1/2/08 10:13 a.m.

programming for the PS3 is really hard, for the 360 is a normal/hard work for a programmer and for the Wii is just really easy which means cheap Games and more $$$ to win.

Each console has its own advantages...

I have seen Baby Boomers STOKED that they can play a video game when they never picked up anything more complicated than a satellite remote...This is the Nintendo Wii

I have seen media format crossovers, which can turn a console into a periphery for a media center...this is what Windows Live and 360 can do...pretty awesome that whatever you download or rip, you can watch on both your computer and your console...

I have seen Open Source within a console; Sony is going where Microsoft dares to go and adding Linux portability to the PS3s firmware...

Each have their own virtues. I own none. Maybe someday...

#80688

my favorite thing about this article is the fact taht they say that Ratchet * Clank Future: Tools of Destruction is the best game on the ps3, i will say that that is a top game, but HELLO what about the game of the year for the PS3 Uncharted: Drake's Fortune!!! This game is visually astounding, and has a very compelling story. this game won game of the year for the PS3, on IGN. yet this site fails to mention that...interesting

#80693

Posted by unregistered user at 1/2/08 10:52 a.m.

I hate reading about people saying the games on the PS3 will be unplayable on the 360 unless you want to 'water it down'. The PS3 is not a super magical machine, a pc is much more powerful than it. Even so with all this 'power' were are the results?

#80713

Posted by unregistered user at 1/2/08 11:48 a.m.

Dissapointment? Game companies getting paid tons of money to give false reviews for game's to get you to buy them. So many 9 or 10 rated games on Gamespot reviews were paid for, which is why you bought them and they sucked.

#80714

Posted by Jayne1138 at 1/2/08 11:49 a.m.

I love all the hate being slung around.

I spent a long, long time debating between the two systems. In the end I went PS3. As a machine itself I find I prefer the Playstation. No red rings of death, and at the end of the day, it is a more powerful machine (yes, I understand that it hasn't been fully utilized).

As far as the whole Blu-ray, HD argument. I've viewed quite a bit of films in both formats on theater systems that could take full advantage, and they are really, really close in terms of quality. Really, too close to call at this point. At the end of the day, I believe in the video game world it will come down to 1 factor: Space. Blu-Ray has 50gb, HD has 30gb. While that hasn't been a factor yet, it's a good bet that it will be down the line.

Then there is the game argument. I fully agree that the PS3 stumbled here. But I think it's worth noting that while PS3 has Final Fantasy, Grand Theft, Grand Turismo, Metal Gear and the mysterious little big planet, there aren't too many major marquee games on the slate for the Xbox. I'm not saying that xbox won't have some big titles, but it's hard to deny that the playstation doesn't have a pretty stacked deck on standby.

I actually think the Xbox is a really cool machine, and has some amazing games. At the end of the day it just comes down to preference. But to sling back and forth saying one sucks or the other blows is just stupid. They are both excellent machines. They have different perks and different drawbacks. That's all it comes down to.

Ah the old my console is better than your console fight.

First, for all those who say PS3 is not a disappointment, try asking Sony execs if they think it is. While they would probably blow smoke in your face as they have already done in multiple interviews, the truth remains that PS3 hardware and software sales are no where near what Sony was expecting, hence, disappointment. Its an impressive piece of hardware, but so was the N64 and Gamecube, and look how poorly those systems did in overall game and system sales.

Xbox 360 showed us why you don't rush to be the first on the market. It was released a full year before PS3 or Wii. They could have taken more time to do further testing of the system but they wanted to hit the holiday rush. They would have probably saved more money by waiting than what they made by being out early.

The Wii is an excellent example of why a system's specs shouldn't be the deciding factor on if it is good or not. Its an upgraded Gamecube with different controllers. But its the Wii games that have made the sales for the system. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next generation of game consoles, the PS4 and the Xbox 720 or whatever they decide to call them focus less on having the best graphics or the most hard drive storage space or the best video connection and instead focused on fun simple games much like the Wii has.

oh yeah Nintendo sold over 20 millions DS consoles beating the ps2 lifetime selling. it took 7 seven years for sony to sell their ps2. The DS took 3 years to sell little over the amount of the whole ps2s that sony sold. Nintendo is taking riskes by trying new things ex. touch screen, motion-sensing something like that. that was a big break-thru of video gaming. Sony didnt have the controller ready till wii-mote came out with motion-sensing. Then sony said we'll have that too. (in my word) Xbox 360 is selling well with their prices too, ps3 as well. xbox360 came out 2005 selling millions. Nintendo came out 2006 and became soldout and beat the 360 records (amount of consoles) ps3 was really bad with their prices and hardware they had. but with the wiis out of supply sony had their chance to catch up and sell ps3 consoles. Now people it will take years for the video games war to end. Wii games is great but most of them sucks with bad graphics. but nintendo will catch up with experienced game makers. ps3 has low libaray of games and is catching up. 360 has great libaray of games but needs to lower prices on their hardwares. okay im done

#80760

Posted by unregistered user at 1/2/08 1:02 p.m.

Jayne1138 you explained it perfect minus the fact that GTA will also be on Xbox 360. you are right what it comes down to is what you want to do at the end of the day. you want to get online and game with others.... get an xbox. listen ps3 is weak currently with game selection but that will change. i personally have the all 3 but i lean towards the xbox. as far as ps3 being more powerful that doesnt mean much because if you look at ps2 it didnt compare power wise to the original xbox and still put out comparible games. bottom line is what do you want to do. plus the whole blue ray thing you dont know which way its going to go. until one is a def winner i wouldnt think about buying one. OR, just buy the XBOX hd dvd player since its under 200 and if everything goes blue ray at least you didnt spend an arm and a leg to get something that plays back hd.

A few small points.

As an American I never had a Spectrum. They really never sold them over here.

The Wii is 100% compatible with all the Gamecube games because it has a compatible processor and graphics chip in it's hardware.

Unreal Tournament 3 is also coming to the Xbox 360 and so is Haze.

The PS3 is not a disappointment. It just didn't meet the overly high expectations of most people in the timeframe they want. The 360 on the other hand has been given so much slack, it's sickening. The Wii...Well it's for parlor games.
This is really the case of Sony now, a lot of people criticize Sony because of the following reasons:
1. It's fashionable to bash Sony for its shortcomings while it is quite cool to be forgiving about Microsoft's SUPER DISAPPOINTING HARDWARE FAILURE RATE. (33%). Do they even follow Six Sigma practices?

2. Final Fantasy X and Gran Turismo 3 came out in the first year of the PS2 while these major franchises haven't come out yet for the PS3. People tend to ignore that there are other AAA exclusives for the PS3 such as RFOM, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted Drake's Fortune, R&C:TOD.

3. Non-developers and lazy developers commenting how difficult it is to program for the PS3. They've completely forgotten that the same complaints arose during the PS2 days. On the other hand, top notch developers like Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Square-Enix, etc, don't seem to be complaining about developing for the PS3 hardware. We only hear it from the mediocre developers like EA, Harmonix, etc.

4.People still think that Blu-ray is being shoved down their throats. Blu-ray is not being shoved down anyone's throats. Blu-ray was just a necessary component of the 7th generation console race. High definition games need a lot of space. The old DVD technology just wouldn't do. So you say, what about downloads? Well, not unless we can download 20-50GB games in less than 5 minutes, I don't think our Internet infrastructure is just about ready for the totally download service. Good news is, PS3 is ready for the now (Blu-ray) and the future (Hard-drive and Broadband Internet download service)

Final words: 360 and Wii are good competitors. The only thing I can fault Sony with is their arrogance. Yes they are arrogant. But they are not arrogant for long. They listen to the gamers. They listen to the criticism. They're changing and giving gamers the best experience possible and they're not sitting pretty.

360 and Wii aren't going to disappear just yet, but their steam is just about dying. A cliche as it may sound, but I believe this race is a perfect example of the turtle and hare scenario. The PS3 is the turtle in this race. We know who emerged as the winner in the end.

#80943

Posted by unregistered user at 1/3/08 5:57 a.m.

i dont think any one of them will go down. i think this battle will go on and on and on. think about it. sony will have its followers and the people that will buy all the systems. the same goes for microsoft and nintendo. the wii you cant find anywhere xbox just sold another crap load plus you have to remember how many subscribers you have to xbox live. ps3 has a high price and will still sell. we will be going on with this argument when ps6 comes out (since they cant come up with a good name) and xbox 1720 is out. i wonder what nintendo would call theirs?

#81069

Posted by unregistered user at 1/3/08 1:48 p.m.

"People tend to ignore that there are other AAA exclusives for the PS3 such as RFOM, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted Drake's Fortune, R&C:TOD."

You're quite right! The sales figures for these games clearly shows that most PS3 owners did indeed ignore those titles. :D

#81138

Posted by unregistered user at 1/3/08 4:58 p.m.

the ps3 will have the most advanced games soon enough. the blu-ray drive... not as a movie player... but as a more advanced memory format with a ridiculous amount of space over and above what the 360 or Wii can handle will make the difference.
developers aren't making PS3 specific games on this level yet because there weren't enough out there. now that the PS3 sold very well this christmas in the US and around the world you will see developers building specifically for the PS3 and things will never be the same again.
in the mean time there are plenty of games to keep owners occupied. they don't have to be exclusive to be good games and there is a year's worth of quality titles on the PS3 already.
.... oh and it really isn't that bad having a high def movie player to go with a high def tv.

I agree completely with the article; PS3's lack of exclusives has left it a disappointing technological marvel in 2007. That is why I just purchased an Xbox. If things shape up for PS3 this year, maybe I'll buy one in 2009 (hopefully a slim model).

#83244

well i don't agree with much of that except the 360 is the worst of all consoles. Mines got the ring of death 4 times unbeleivable then i got a ps3 and with the bluray you simply have to say it is the better console and the dramatic drops in price. don't you worry by march 2k8 the ps3 will have alot to show. and the wii does have some seriously good aspects about it some of the games coming out for it *GULP* supersmash bros brawl aawww can't wait and to top it off its ONLINE what a break through. but seriously everyone should own a ps3.
