Cookbooks -- not just recipes, but things like author instructions and table settings -- can illuminate culture and history surprisingly well. Carol Gold, a professor at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, took that approach for her book "Danish Cookbooks." She'll be at the library in – where else – Ballard (5614 22nd Ave. N.W.) at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, speaking on Danish cooking and how cookbooks bring Danish culture and society to life.
