Can Barack Obama take a joke?

My biggest complaint is not that The New Yorker went too far with the cover cartoon of Barack Obama as a Muslim, but that the people running presidential campaigns have no sense of humor.

Admittedly, I have a rather skewed view of the world after devoting most of my life to insulting the sensibilities of half my readers day in and day out, but I had no problem understanding that the now-notorious cartoon was a dig at all the right wing nutballs and conspiracy cranks who have been spreading slander about Obama through the gutters of the blogosphere. The artist pulled together all those little lies to create an Oval Office scene with Barack in Muslim garb fist bumping his black militant wife under a portrait of Osama Bin Laden while an American flag burned in the fireplace. I got the joke and recognized the intended target. I don't think the drawing was racist, I don't think it was too subtle and I don't think it will influence anyone to vote against Obama who wasn't already voting against him anyway.

Obviously, not everyone agrees with me, including plenty of people I like and admire -- such as my sweet wife and several of my cartoonist colleagues. Maybe I've pushed the edge too many times myself to appreciate their sincere negative response to the cartoon. And maybe I've enjoyed the controversy a little too much, having joined the fray by drawing a cartoon that imagined similar treatment being given to John McCain by the conservative National Review. My cartoon got picked up on a few web sites, including the Huffington Post, thus inspiring an extra dose of hate mail and a rude phone call from a guy in Chicago who called me a "commie pinko" who, he hoped, "would rot in Hell."

At least part of my motivation for partaking in this mud wrestling match is that I didn't really believe either the Obama campaign or the McCain campaign when they issued statements calling The New Yorker cover "tasteless and offensive." That's boilerplate -- the same kind of fake outrage that all the candidates have been displaying during this election year. It seems as if the Obama campaign and Hillary Clinton's campaign spent the whole winter and spring seizing on mildly rude comments from people in the other camp, feigning outrage and demanding apologies and firings. Part of this is because the media has pounced on every tiny gaffe and turned each one into a 24-hour news story. Everybody's been appalled about something and no one has had the good sense to say, "lighten up."

You can see the effect with John McCain. Here's a guy who still has the attitude of the wild-living, cocky fighter pilot he used to be. That is actually the most appealing thing about him. It is why the press has always liked him and why rides on the Straight Talk Express were the hot ticket on the campaign trail. McCain has a hard time answering a question without first making a sarcastic or funny remark. But, now, he's censoring himself, biting his tongue and getting as solemn and cautious as his opponent.

And how about that opponent? Does Barack ever tell a joke? He may be the second coming of JFK, but he sure lacks the Kennedy wit. If I had been him, I would have grabbed the opportunity afforded by The New Yorker cover and I would have said, "Yeah, that's a great cartoon. It shows just how ridiculous all these rumors are. The fact is, when I get into the White House, I'll have a portrait of Abraham Lincoln above the mantle and the only thing I'll be burning in the fireplace will be transcripts of Rush Limbaugh's radio programs."

Couldn't somebody on the Obama campaign figure this out? Any sissy can complain about being picked on. A leader can take a joke -- and turn it to his advantage.

He did see the point. Didn't you see Larry King Live ?? He showed more grace than most candidates..Sen. Mc Cain saw it as tasteless and offensive as well. Do your homework before posting such fabrications.

It is remarkable that so many people, including the poster above me, are too obtuse to do anything but take offense at the joke.

I don't know anything about that New Yorker Magazine cover, but I know the answer to your question. Yes, Obama can take a joke, and I can prove it.

Do you recall the guy who was badgering him for an autograph many months ago? The guy was taped doing it, and he was really aggressive. It was amazing that the Secret Service didn't haul him off. I think that was a joke, and I think the guy was trying to provoke the senator. He kept his cool through the whole thing, and then in the end was a good sport and relented, giving the guy an autograph.

If I had anything like the patience, political skill, and craftiness of the guy, then I wouldn't be writing in the local paper's forum where perhaps five and a half people would read my hot air.

McCain ain't bad either, but his reputation for a temper proves that he's the one less likely to take a joke. You can take that one to the bank.

I don't find that cartoon humorous and I do think Senator Obama has handled the issue with grace. Usually those who find such a depiction as "humor" are also those who have never been the brunt of a racist or ethnic comment or "joke."

I would like those of you who think Obama is being overly sensitive one question:

If John McCain had something similar done to him, and that would mean caricaturizing his wives and adopted child (similarly, the subject of smears), how many of you would just toss it off and say, oh McCain has no sense of humor?

If you are honest, you know that would refer to none of you. Because if McCain had been the one brutalized by the cartoon, you would be calling for blood.

What hypocrites.

"I don't think it will influence anyone..."

If you thought that was true you probably wouldn't be working in media. It was bad taste and an obvious smear by the magazine.

Are we not mature enough to get to the real issues? --- Oh sorry I forgot where you worked.

No one, apparently, can take an OBVIOUS joke.
The second I saw it I laughed because it is CLEARLY
making fun of the idiots spreading fear about the Obamas'.
PLEASE PEOPLE
Wake up!

Thanks!

David, I enjoyed your column, and I agree with you!

I liked a cartoon of yours that I saw the other day: Bush playing in the sand and imagining that history will see him as another Truman.

(I found your cartoon by accident. I live in Missouri and was not familiar with the Post-Intelligencer or your work. I was looking for information about the Horsey family. An ancestor of mine was a Horsey in 18th-c. Limerick.)

No, Obama cannot take a joke about him because he is a hugh egotistical, self-serving, vain individual who thinks he's the smartest, most intelligent, best speaker, knows more about running a war than the military, knows when to change his stand on issues to get votes, knows how to fool the voters of America, is a chameleon, would make a terrible commander in chief. His ego is so large that he has his own 'presidential seal' and has started redecorating the Lincoln bedroom, needs a football stadium instead of a convention center for his acceptance speech, wants to speak at the Brandunberg Gate even though it is causing controversy in Germany. Does anyone really know this man? Don't think so. At times I believe he doesn't even know himself. Vote him as our president and America will be in sad shape. If we cut in run from Iraq, what do you imagine the Iranians will do? They would love that; they can take over the whole Middle East and have more terrorist camps in more countries.

When you do nothing but be-little people for a living - you will always upset the ones you be-little.

of course you do seem to be campaigning for obama the messiah this year.

Good Grief, the artist was Lampooning everybody except Obama. It was hilarious but not nearly as much as the response some people have when their undies get all wrapped up in their butt cheeks. Bend over and crack a smile!

Wake-up Dave, your wife is correct! The New Yorker cover is beyond offensive, it is a public lynching. And no, I am not African-American. As one of your readers points out, this wouldn't be done to McCain by the New Yorker, they wouldn't dare! Only a guy in progressive-safe Seattle would. One only had to see the smirk on James Carville's face while approving on TV of the cover as satire to anticipate a Clinton convention come-back forcing Obama to take her for VP.
Sorry Dave, you missed this one badly!

Why is the question "Can Barack Obama take a joke?" when the joke is not intended to be on Obama? What seems unfair -- about the discussion, if not about the cartoon -- is that the people spreading the bigoted rumors about Obama are getting a free ride. At the same time Obama, in voicing even mild objections, is getting hit for being humorless. Strange results from a satire that was supposed to be sympathetic to Obama and critical of the rumor-mongers trying to bring him down.

No. Don't you know one cannot joke about Obama? It is racist. How many late night comedians who joke about McCain or Clinton do likewise about Obama, although there is plenty there to work with.

Obama, realizing his attitude was too similar to those who want to ban Huck Finn from libraries and Muslims who rampaged against cartoons of Mohammed, has now - too late to be noticed - corrected his humorless self-righteousness. He recognizes that, indeed, some jokes about Obama must be permitted or his supporters will start looking like nanny-state Comintern members.

David, I don't find that "cocky fighter pilot" mentality all that funny or comforting in John Sidney McCain III. The press is actually his base. Like they did with George Bush because they "liked him," they give him universally positive coverage while covering up his shortcomings while ignoring his gaffs and flip flops.

Maybe you should do a cartoon on that? Reporters covered with McCain's killer rib rub perhaps kissing his feet?

#151677

Posted by Seatawk at 7/16/08 8:36 a.m.

If there was a cartoon with Bush, or any other conservative having sex with animals, it would be satire. Doing anything even remotely offensive to Obama the precious, it's a smear.

Cry me a river.

Imagine a National Review cover caricaturing McCain tethered with marionette strings peeking up out of a coffin. Republicans would be similarly pained and confused if told the cover was not trying to reinforce sterotypes, but was intended to enlighten.

well maybe because I'm a failed political cartoonist, I don't have sufficient sophistication to appreciate the new yorker cover. visually it struck me as strange. Yes i knnow what theya re trying to do but that doesn't mean it was successful. as for mr horsey's counter, it was ok but actually not that strong an analogy as it touched ona real ratehr than afake issue.( the closer analog would have been to call mccain a traitor for his behvior in vietnam, there are/were groups selling books equivalent to the swift boaters about mccain but as they are right winger the press ignores them. had mccain ran as kerry's vp they would have gotten lots of press
final comment tom toles did a much better job than you on thenew yorker flat but then again he is generally better than you are

#151758

Posted by unregistered user at 7/16/08 12:37 p.m.

back with a little more information. there is a group called vietnam veterans against john mccain which is a collection of smears that are roughly equivalent to the stuff used on obama. (mccain is a traitor etc) Now, if you really had done an analogous cartoon to the new yorker cover you would have called mccain a traitor and a manchurian candidate as well as slamming him for dumping his first wife al a newt gingrich. Now that cartoon would have gotten you tons of publicity but also it would have showed how biased the media is as the right wing would be screaming that you called mccain a traitor. No matter that in this hypothetcial scenario that is not what it would have been. I realize this is a bit complicated and perhaps too subtle for you. so be it.
My point is that you pulled your punch in your mccain cartoon. I suspect you know that becuase no decent self respecting cartoonist would have done the traitor cartoon. (but that was the analog) Ok one cartoonist would have, Mike Lester but only if mc cain was running as a Democrat( see lester's cartoon on kerry medals of about 4 years ago)

No one thought of it as a JOKE until we were all told that it was a joke!

#151817

The Horsey version would n e v e r have been seen as irony - that requires imputing to the cartoonist a desire to repudiate the reprehensible material.

love234america - I get it. You are being satirical. You are showing what kind of a response a knuckleheaded, bigoted, idiotic conservative would post. Very funny, you little liberal you. Many people might have been upset with your post but you got them! Quite clever.

Sorry, Horsey, MOST people didn't get the "point."

Most lefties I know were initially very upset and questioned how the NY could do this.

When it was explained to them they calmed down and responded: Yeah, it was what the Rightwingers have been saying ... blah, blah, blah.

SORRY, Obama saw it like most of the rest of us and doesn't buy the post mortems.
