Natural disasters strike often with little warning, especially tornadoes. I just returned from spending time in Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois and witnessed firsthand the wrath of weather. This part of the country has been hit with a myriad of tornadoes and bad storms the past few weeks. Part of the preparedness for natural disasters includes planning for the safety of our cats. An Emergency Cat Care Kit is a necessity, but time must be taken to gather the items together long before a tornado hits. You may only have minutes after the siren sounds (a tornado warning) or at best a few hours (a tornado watch) to seek safety before a tornado strikes.
The most important point to keep in mind is if it is not safe for you, it is not safe for your cat. Cats often sense impending storms. So be mindful of your cat's hideout spots inside the home. If your cat is outdoors, do your best to get it inside. During a watch stage, you want your cat easily accessible. During a warning, the cat needs to be in a carrier and taken with you to the basement or most sturdy room of your home. You need a strong cat carrier, not cardboard. During tornado season, store the carrier on the basement steps or an easily accessible area that family members know about. The objective is to get the cat in the carrier before the last second--otherwise you may not be able to find the frightened animal in time.
The following items need to be gathered up prior to tornado season. They can be conveniently stored in a plastic storage container with a lid and placed in your storm safe room.
1. Cat food and water--store several days of food and water, in case you have to move to temporary living quarters. Be sure to include bowls and a can opener if needed.
2. A small litter box and litter.
3. A first-aid kit including your cat's medications.
4. A favorite toy.
5. Photos of your cat--if you are separated provide to authorities or post on the Internet.
Have you ever been in a tornado with your cat?
Happy Purrs!
