How's Maggie Doing?

Have you noticed how much people enjoy talking about their pets? A friend commented to me that the focus of three adult couples' Memorial Day conversation centered on their dogs--all by the way were in attendance. One person started a story about what Trixie did last week and that led to one story after the next by the other guests! This phenomenon has become more evident to me as I am out and about talking about the Tatianna book. In turn, I love asking a new acquaintance a pet question as an ice breaker. The conversation usually starts out something like this:

"Do you have animals?"
"Yes, I have a cat."
"What is your cat's name?"
"Millie."
"How long have you had Millie?"

After that, there's little need for any more questions on my part. The caregiver is now sharing full details about Millie. I learn how she came to acquire Millie, the time Millie got sick, Millie's favorite toy, and Millie's favorite hideaway. Well, you get the picture! Oh, how I love to hear these heartwarming stories!

I also enjoy checking up on my friends' animals. "How's Maggie doing?" I recently asked a colleague. Maggie was a Christmas gift dog for his wife. He proceeded to tell me all about doggie school and doggie day care and how he needed to get a second job to take care of all these additional responsibilities.

Why do we love talking about our pets so much? Well, for many people, our pets are our children. They are part of our family. They are an integral part of our daily activities. Lexie Lee is hung over my lap as I write this blog. She does not want to miss a thing, and I love having her near me.

So the biggest favor you can pay your family and friends is to ask "How's ___________?" Then just sit back and listen, nod and say um a couple of times and simply enjoy the unfolding tale. It's bound to bring a smile to your face!

Do you have a favorite cat story to share?

Happy Purrs!
