Dennis's story

Dennis Lindberg's death is a story that encompasses so many hot-button issues of our time: religious freedom, parental rights, medical ethics, whether the state should intervene in individual health choices, the duty of the state to protect a child's welfare, when young adults become able to make important decisions for themselves.

The story in a nutshell: Lindberg, 14, was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia three weeks ago. Doctors said he needed treatment that included blood transfusions; most children with this form of leukemia recover.

However, Lindberg was a Jehovah's Witness, and transfusions go against the teachings of his religion. He became a Witness while in the care of his aunt, also a follower, who became his legal guardian after his biological father was jailed for drug possession. Lindberg's father and mother had battled drug addiction for years.

With the support of medical professionals and state social workers, they petitioned a judge to force Lindberg to undergo treatment that might save his life. The judge refused to do so on Wednesday, ruling that Lindberg was a "mature minor" who seemed capable of making important religious and medical decisions for himself.

Lindberg died of his illness hours later.

The very serious questions his case raised, however, show no hint of passing quietly in the night.

Why Jehovah's Witnesses refuse blood transfusions.

Jehovah's Witnesses elders will investigate and disfellowship any Jehovah Witness who takes a blood transfusion,to say the issue is a 'personal conscience matter' is subterfuge to keep the Watchtower out of lawsuits..
Jehovah's Witnesses children die every year worldwide due to blood transfusion ban.25% of transfusions are unwarranted meaning that 75% are potential life saving.Rank & file Jehovah's Witness are indoctrinated to be scared to death of blood

FYI

1) JW's DO USE many parts aka 'fractions' aka components of blood,so if it's 'sacred' to God why the hypocritical contradiction flip-flop?

2) They USE blood collections that are donated by Red cross and others but don't donate back, more hypocrisy.

3) The Watchtower promotes and praises bloodless elective surgeries, this is a great advancement indeed.BUT it's no good to me if I am bleeding to death from a car crash and lose half my blood volume and need EMERGENCY blood transfusion.

Know this, the reason that JW refuse blood is because of their spin on the 3000 year old Biblical old testament, modern medicine will eventually make blood donations and transfusions a thing of the past. When this technology happens it won't vindicate the Jehovah's Witnesses and all the deaths that have occured so far.

The Watchtower's rules against blood transfusions will eventually be abolished (very gradually to reduce wrongful death lawsuit liability) even now most of the blood 'components' are allowed.

In 20 years there will be artificial blood and the Red Cross will go on with other noble deeds.
None of these changes will absolve the Watchtower leaders or vindicate their twisted doctrines
Are there dangers from blood? There are over 500 aspirin deaths in USA yearly.

I feel sorry for people who think they know all the answers. There is not one of Jehovah's Witnesses' who feels that they have been "indoctrinated" by the Watchtower Society on the matter of the use of blood. This is an entirely informed personal decision, based on knowledge of the Bible. and a personal dedication to the Supreme Ruler of the Universe, Jehovah God. They do not force their beliefs on anyone. Furthermore what these people fail to recognize is that untold numbers of people die every year from having blood transfusions. and many others die from serious disease contracted through the use of blood. No doubt that is the reason the staff at Children's Hospital do not use blood in treatment unless absolutly necessary. It is recognized as being dangerous. Also there is no guarantee Dennis would have survived had a transfusion been forced upon him.
As this writer says in 20 years they may have an artificial blood substitute. Then Jehovah's Witnesses' will have no problem, in the meantime they will obey the Bibles command to "abstain from Blood", because it is a command from God, not any man.
If Dennis were my son I would be overjoyed that he kept his promise to Jehovah to the end, and died faithful, just as Jesus and many of his followers did. Many of them chose death when being persecuted, when by choosing to be disobedient to their Creator could have given them a few more years to live. But what would life be worth to them then when they had knowingly disobeyed their God Jehovah. Judas went off and killed himself after he became a traitor! Do you think Dennis could ever be the wonderful young man that he was if he turned his back on his God just for a few more years of life now. His strong belief was precisely why he was such a fine young man. Oh yes, I would grieve greatly at the loss, and do grieve for his family. But they can be so proud of him for his uncompromising spirit in the face of friends and family members who choose not to understand. Even though I only met Dennis just once he had a wonderful way of getting into your heart, and you never forgot him. All the wonderful letters and expressions of love on his web site was testimony to all the lives he touched. But Dennis died with intense Bible based faith that soon he will be with his family again in a wonderful new world, healthy, strong, and happy never again to have to face dying. How happy he would be if only those people who think he was 'brainwashed'. would actually look into the Bible itself and actually learn why Dennis had such faith and was so happy. Sadly they will never know the faith that Dennis had because they choose to live for the now, rather than for the future. Thank you/

THE MORAL OF THIS STORY IS THAT IT IS SAFER FOR CHILDREN TO BE REARED BY DRUG USERS THAN BY JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES.

With that point made, the DEATH of this CHILD is a SCANDAL.

The District Attorney needs to investigate why Children's Hospital waited until it was too late for blood transfusions to help, instead of requesting an emergency court hearing as soon as it was obvious that transfusions would eventually be necessary. Start with the so-called "Ethicist" at the Hospital.

Summaries of over 225 similiar Jehovah's Witness Court Cases are found at:

BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS AND OTHER LEGAL ISSUES AFFECTING CHILDREN OF JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES

Reviewing the similar cases at that website reveals that typically only Hospitals that agree with the Jehovah's Witnesses position would delay seeking court intervention in such an obvious situation.

Dan Haszard is 100% correct.
I was raised as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. The Blood issue is one of Many that has lead me to raise my child FAR from it.
"Unregistered user" above is obviously (and sadly) still Indoctrinated by the Society's beliefs. The poster says it is "God's law" and not man that they obey yet it is man's (The WatchTower Society's) "interpretation" of this ONE scripture that pertains to rituals and not medicine that they choose to make life choices over.
When the Society "adjusts" the views of blood the Witnesses do not question it but just follow whatever rules or adjustments are set forth.
The Blood rules have changed many times over the years...how hypocritical that it is OK to take some parts of blood but not whole blood. Sounds like it's not OK to steal the car but it IS OK to buy the parts!

The hypocrite Watchtower DOES ALLOW blood and plays God with what "parts" can be taken.
Blood issue at a glance: The Watchtower leadership of the Jehovah's Witnesses say NO blood, BUT they actually DO ALLOW some blood "fractions".
Problem is this variance is so esoteric complicated that by the time special elders appear in the ER with the rule book, the JW patient is at the point of no return, bleeding to death.
NOW,they blame the hospital staff for not having a "cell saver" machine instead of the Watchtower leaders who are responsible for making the rules.

I was born a 3rd generation Jehovah's Witness in 1957 and endured the Watchtower's no blood commandment with longstanding bleeding Crohn's disease. The Watchtower leadership expects followers to die for their dogma and many have. The medical staff get blamed and are 'damned if they do damned if they don't'.

In 20 years there will be artificial blood for anyone who chooses it,putting an end to this drama.
