iPackaging, Redmond-style

ScreenshotSomeone has assembled a hilarious, dead-on parody video showing what one of Apple's sleek, minimalist iPod boxes might look like if it were redesigned by Microsoft.

Following all the recent hype and hypotheses surrounding the mysterious Origami project, this parody illustrates very well one reason why none of the would-be iPod killers powered by Redmond have made much of a splash in the market. If your product's packaging has to be dedicated to explaining what's inside in order to convince consumers to buy it, you may have already lost the battle. An iPod box doesn't really have to explain anything about what's inside (although you can find the features checklist and system requirements on the bottom, where browsing customers are unlikely to look).

Not that everyone agrees simpler is better, judging from the comments over at Microsoft's Channel 9 Forums.

(Update, March 15: Todd explains the origins of the video.)
