Brian Chin's Weblog surveys the Web to spot what people are talking about ...
March 23, 2004Update on YeeAfter dropping criminal charges against him, the Army reprimanded Capt. James Yee, formerly a Muslim chaplin at Guantanamo Bay, for two minor infractions under military law: adultery and downloading pornography onto his government-issued computer. That's quite a drop from original accusations of espionage and sedition. P-I columnist Robert L. Jamieson Jr. argues that the Army owes Yee an apology for its "modern-day witch hunt." In an unscientific, online poll, a majority of readers agreed. The San Francisco Chronicle's editorial board takes a similar stand, writing: "No democratic government should be able to ruin a person's life in this way." In an opinion piece published at CounterPunch and Al Jazeerah, Mike Whitney takes a less measured tone, calling the Yee case "just the most recent perversion [of] justice under the Bush Administration." Meanwhile, San Jose Mercury News columnist L.A. Chung laments how most media outlets underplayed the low-key end of the Yee case, especially given its explosive beginning: "Take care of the conclusions you reach on the initial reports. You might miss an exoneration later." Category: MediasweepPosted by Brian Chin at March 23, 2004 06:26 AM Comments
Captain Yee must speak. He must tell his well-wishers, not only in USA but all over the world, what exacly happened. He has been brave and steadfast in his beliefs.Let courage and forthrightness prevail. Posted by: Aleem Afridi at March 23, 2004 07:36 AMThe US military helped to spread the muslim faith, showing Allah prevails. Posted by: Benny Chin at March 23, 2004 07:46 AMSpreading the muslim faith through Yee's adultery and pornography viewing??? Posted by: Travis at March 23, 2004 07:58 AMColumbo should handle this case. Posted by: Vorn Mom at March 23, 2004 08:06 AMTravis, you don't even know the facts of the case, nor do you know if the accusations of adultery and pornography are true. You are a perfect example of the ill advised public and a product of the Bush administration's spin doctor's who make individuals like you perfectly content in knowing NOTHING. Posted by: JZ at March 23, 2004 08:17 AMWhat if he took a hand grenade and killed people because of his religion? People would say why didnt anyone do anything. He was charged and investigated just like any other criminal. Innocent until proven guilty. So hes not guilty, but downloading porn? Who doesnt do that, even if you dont want to, sometimes malicous hackers force it on your computer. Maybe he is innocent of those charges too. Time will tell Posted by: toolio at March 23, 2004 08:22 AMAmen JZ! Posted by: Tan at March 23, 2004 08:28 AMMuslim porn is when a woman's burqa rides up and you see an exposed ankle. If Cap'n Yee had visited this website, complete with semi-pornographic advertisements he'd be guilty under his own Muslim standard. Right now the add pictures a semi-clad trampish looking woman with the text, "Sexy Suzie seeks ___ with ___ to ____ with on Friday night." The punishment for adultery under Sharia law is death by stoning. Non-judicial punishment is a slap on the wrist, no? If this guy's a true Muslim he should be calling for the Army to grease up the camel for the punishment the prophet laid out for adulterers. Posted by: Bob Harvey at March 23, 2004 08:28 AMIslam is a disgusting philosophy which has no place in the modern world. The sooner we come to that conclusion, the better. Where were the condemnations of 9/11 from major Muslim leaders? Nowhere. And we still allow "diversity visas" to places like Sudan, Yemen etc. What the hell was so wrong with being a white nation again? Posted by: Karim Awit at March 23, 2004 08:35 AMSend him to Leavenworth and let him make little rocks out of big rocks for a while Posted by: Army Sgt at March 23, 2004 08:56 AMHey Karim, A white nation again? Since when has North America ever been a white nation? Stolen from the natives, built and prospered on the shoulders of black slaves, and fuelled by the oil of the Arabs... These free-for all posts expose the dark side of humanity, when people condemn philosophies and beliefs without understanding them at all. Islam is beyond imbeciles like this John Harvey guy, whoever he is. The American constitution is supposed to guarantee freedom of religion. Unfortunately, the reality today is that there is freedom for all religions except Islam. So America never really achieved what it set out to do after all... What a failure for democracy and freedom! Posted by: Malik at March 23, 2004 09:00 AMBush has nothing to do with the UCMJ. Under which all military personnel are subject. It does not include any instance of Christians being treated better that Jews, or any other belief system. However, to choose posting a comment on the internet or anywhere else about a subject you know nothing about shows and increadible arrogance and ignorrance on the part of you narrow thinking liberals. I love projection. The art of accusing another of doing what your all about. You'll never see a liberal ask a conservative what ideas they have. It is only the other way around. But alas, thats a sign of weakness to be exploited. Posted by: Erk at March 23, 2004 09:04 AMIf the military went after every soldier who looked at porn or had an affair, there would be no one left to serve. He's been singled out, again, first time because he's a Mulsim (who was getting some?), second time just to save face. This whole thing is BS, another military abuse of power and everyone knows it. Posted by: Kevin at March 23, 2004 09:06 AMKarim (I'm sure that's not your real name), first of all Islam is not a philosophy, it's a religion. Secondly, ALL major mainstream (widely accepted) Muslim leaders did condemn the 9/11 attacks, not to do so would be absolutely outside the religion. Perhaps you've been asleep for the past couple of years. Wow, white supremacy is definitely a better philosophy. Man, you're scarier than the 9/11 perpetrators! Posted by: JZ at March 23, 2004 09:10 AMJZ mentions that we "do not know the facts in the case" May I point out that neither does he. The military dropped the charges because the "chose not to present the case for national security reasons". Now we do not know what those were so to speculate there was not case seems just as wrong as to speculate he was guilty. His dislike of Mr. Bush also comes through. He is willing to pronounce him guilty without facts. Posted by: jc at March 23, 2004 09:13 AMMalik: Hhhhm, let's see... I live in America, less than 2 miles from a mosque where today-all day- people will gather freely and worship. And you know what? Less than two miles in the other direction there is a Baptist church, where today-all day- people will gather freely and worship. Two and a half miles west and there is a Catholic church, another mile further a synagogue, and if I looked I could certainly find Hindu and Buddhist temples with people in them today- all day- worshipping. There IS freedom of religion in America, my friend. Thank God you and your "hate America" crowd haven't changed that yet. Posted by: mjs at March 23, 2004 09:14 AMIf Captain Yee committed adultery and downloaded pornography on his military computer he should be punished accordingly. Although he was not found guilty of espoinage and sedition he is still a sinner in the eyes of Allah (I don't think adultery and pornography were condoned by Islam last time I checked the Koran) so I don't think he is such a great Muslim role model. I like Mohammed Ali better personally. Posted by: Nimble143 at March 23, 2004 09:15 AMSince when do Conservatives ever wait to be asked their opinion? It sounds like Erk has a problem with freedom of speech when it means freedom to disagree with his ideas. It's time that America wakes up and forgets about the petty differences between "conservative" and "liberal". The economic and demographic divisions between people are so diverse today that they escape such black-and-white analysis. While you are debating and imprisoning innocent people for years, there are more and more terrorists who will play on your weakness and division. Your leaders simply try to cover their butts and win another election while more innocents die every day. I speak as a Canadian and a Muslim. Our country wisely steered clear of Iraq and has been helping to bring peace to the world instead of war. Meanwhile, Americans imprison innocent Canadian citizens for YEARS and send them to be TORTURED in foreign countries just because of their religious beliefs. Not to mention American Air Force idiots hyped on speed bombing Canadian troops in Afghanistan for no reason. Ya, all in the name of American Insecurity. Posted by: Malik at March 23, 2004 09:19 AMChaplain Yee was placed into prison for months. Chaplain Yee was accused of a crime and never allowed to see any evidence against him. Chaplain Yee finally had all counts of the criminal charges against him dropped, but without so much as an apology. All that remains are two non-criminal accusations of "improperly" downloading pornography and adultery? I thought the U.S. Army told us Chaplain Yee was a spy. I guess they were wrong... Malicious prosecution is just the tip of this iceberg. Posted by: Moses at March 23, 2004 09:27 AMDon't like here? Then leave. Go back to your vermin infested country and quit killing innocent Americans. Or, are you speaking out of ignorance because you've never been here? I agree with everything else that you said, because America was built on ethnic diversity and THAT is what makes us the greatest country in the world. I do, however believe that it's time to completely outlaw religion. I'm tired of people dying because of someone else's stupidity. Face it people, God (or Allah) is just Santa Claus for adults. I'm not just talking about Muslims, Christians need to go too. I haven't forgotten about book burnings and the Inquisition. More people have died because of religion then all of the wars and plagues combined and I think it's time to put an end to it. I guess the one thing I have to give to the Christians is that at least they're brave enough to kill armed people when they launch their holy wars. Muslims are so cowardly they have to kill unarmed innocents without giving them a chance to defend themselves. I think it's real amusing that these people seem hell-bent on killing everyone, but haven't seemed to figure out how to kill someone who actually knows they're in a fight. Posted by: Charles at March 23, 2004 09:39 AMWell Malik, you are completely right. If your Canadian leaders ever use nerve gas on you and start filling up mass graves with thousands of innocent Canadians, I hope we in the United States will work to bring peace to the world and will steer clear of internal Canadian politics. If this ever happens in your country, I would hope that we would protest in the streets for a peaceful ending to your slaughter and would impose trade sanctions on your country, and at all costs I would hope we would avoid war. No matter how many millions of you were slaughtered. As far as Yee goes, I can't comment because neither I or you or anyone in here knows the facts. All I see is a lot of mouth running for political reasons. On both sides. Posted by: George at March 23, 2004 09:53 AMKarim had the right idea, _all_ religions, not just Islam, are sick and disgusting. President Bush amply shows the danger of putting religious wackos into positions of power. Bush isn't a 'Conservative,' he's insane. Posted by: Curly Surmudgeon at March 23, 2004 12:41 PMNow that is clear that Captain James Yee is not guilty of anything of racist "spying charge", a quote comes to mind: "what office do I go to , to get back my reputation?" I wonder why the racist cable Fox News outlet has failed to report that the bogus charge against Capt. Yee were just that bogus. Fox News made alot of noise when Capt. Yee was first persecuted. This case is very similiar to the bogus "spying" charge against another American (also of Chinese heritage), Dr. Wen Ho Lee. Are the racist rightwings and leftwings(the NY Times was one of the first to condemn Dr. Lee) trying to start an Asian American Holocaust? Shame shame shame on your morons who let these racist thugs get away with trying to start an Asian American Holocaust? By sitting on your fat asses and doing nothing, you are almost as quilty as Fox News. Post a comment
