Brian Chin's Weblog surveys the Web to spot what people are talking about ...

August 28, 2003

The day e-mail died?

"Is this the of e-mail?"

That's been a common question recently as the Sobig.F worm has pummeled our in-boxes. I think the jury's still out. But the exploding spam and virus problems may well sound the knell for e-mail publishing, says Steve Outing, senior editor at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies.

What will replace it? RSS feeds, which offer many of the conveniences of e-mail newsletters but are spam-proof, too.

For many consumers, moving from e-mail newsletters to RSS feeds might seem daunting. It is up to publishers, then, to sell the RSS concept, and explain that it's a solution to the spam muddle.

(Self-Interest Corner: seattlepi.com offers several RSS feeds.)

YAHOO!!! I'm thrilled the P-I now has feeds for the major news sections and not just this blog. I've added them to MyWireService http://www.mywireservice.com, a new online news aggregator (they'll appear in all the appropriate categories tomorrow).

We couldn't agree more with Outings article (see my comments here: http://www.mywireservice.com/news/2003/08/10.html). We built MyWireService to as an easy to use news aggregator for the rest of us. Because it is on the web, there is not software to download and your news is accessible from work, home or wherever. We include a category listing of feeds and some feed packages so it is easy to get your feet wet in the world of rss... Unlike most of the software aggregators, we try to use a "custom newspaper" metaphor, so you can set up your own sections, and just see the fresh news; rather than use an email metaphor, which requires a lot of clicking and marking things as read. We're still in beta testing with LOTS more features to come...

And in my self-interest corner: did you know that MyWireService is built right on Vashon Island? ;-)
