Dear Elisabeth,
I am in my early thirties with breasts that are B cup and a bit saggy from losing weight ten years ago. In general, I feel they're just un-sexy. I have been thinking of pursuing some type of augmentation surgery, but I'm wondering, would this negatively impact breastfeeding when I eventually do have a child, in about five years?
Signed...Baffled bosom

Dear BB,
In most cases, women with implants can successfully breastfeed. But your breasts are going to change again with pregnancy and nursing, doubling or even tripling in size. They will likely not look the same as they did before your pregnancy, regardless of any surgery. Breasts are like moving targets on our chests, changed by weight, gravity or heredity. Because cosmetic surgery is both expensive and medically risky, it might be best to wait until after childbirth and nursing to make your decision.

Dear BL:
My nipples don't stand out. Am I weird?
Signed...Shy Girl

Dear Shy:
Up to ten percent of all women have one or more nipples that are inverted, or "shy." You can have this condition "corrected" through plastic surgery, athough there's nothing wrong with having flat or inverted nipples. Leaving them the way they are won't interfere with your ability to lactate or nurse. Because breasts keep changing, your nipples may outgrow their current bashful state. Many women worry that their nipples stand out too much and wear concealers to keep theirs hidden!!

P.S. If your nipples suddenly or unexpectedly invert, it could possibly be a symptom of one rare form of breast cancer. In that case, do visit your doctor to make sure your girls are healthy.

Dear Boob Lady:
Can you have a breast lift without an augmentation? I like the size of my breasts, but would like them to be more perky and up back where they started.
Signed...missing the view from above

Dear Missing:
Yes, you can get a breast lift without an augmentation (the insertion of saline or silicone implants). It does depend on the size of your breasts since smaller boobs translate into less breast tissue to "lift." Check out the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, where you can find iinformation on this procedure. If you do go in for a surgical consult, make an appointment with more than one doctor, and be sure to take a good look at their before and after patients pics. You can find other books and additional links on this subject at my website!

Dear Boob Lady:
I have trouble finding good sport bras that hold, lift, and separate. Is there a health reason they all seem to do the uni-boob look?
Signed...2 boobs not 1

Dear Athletic Goddess:
There are two basic styles of athletic bras on the market: the compressor (great for holding down the rack) and the encapsulator (two distinct pockets that contain each individual breast). Women above a C cup may find the greatest comfort from those that keep their girls separate but equally supported. Title Nine is a great place to shop for sports bras geared to a variety of breast sizes and activity. Their motto is "just say no...to the 3 bra workout." The BL adds: and to the one-boob bra look, too!

Dear BL:
A friend told me that underwire bras can cause cancer by pinching the lymph nodes. Is this true?
Signed...Fearful in Seattle

Dear Fearful:
Bras do not cause breast cancer. Dr. Susan Love, an authority on the subject and author of The Breast Book, addresses this issue on her website (along with other mammary myths circulating the internet):

Bras--plain or underwire--do not cause breast cancer. In fact, lymphatic fluid from the breast drains directly back toward the chest wall and the armpit, not underneath the breast where the bra might be tight. If you don't like wearing a bra, don't wear one. But don't think that if you don't wear a bra it will keep you from getting breast cancer, or that if you do wear one, it will increase your breast cancer risk.

Bras can be detrimental to your health, though, if you are wearing the wrong size. If you haven't been fitted by a professional expert in over a year, take the time and be good to your girls!

Dear Boob Lady:
Is there anything we can do short of going under the knife to keep our boobs from getting droopy as we age?
Signed..old and droopy

Dear Ageless Beauty:
Most boobs eventually travel southward. It really depends on your DNA and the genes you inherited from both sides of your family. Women often sag after breastfeeding, because fat deposits leave breasts through nursing, and don't always return to the same place. Sometimes women are happier with their breasts after nursing, too. Boobs are ever morphing parts of our bodies – they were made to change and rearrange with how we live our lives. Gain a few pounds, and your breasts get bigger. What we in America call "droopiness" is revered in other societies. It's really all in how you look at boobs. Visit 007b.com to see the ups and down of breasts in this world!
