A Colorful Saturday In Tacoma

Last Saturday we had a really nice day taking the grandparents to the artsy museums in Tacoma. We didn't know it when we set out, but they were celebrating Tacoma Art Museum's 5th birthday. Admission was free, they had yummy cupcakes, funky cake art, and hat making workshops for kids. I liked this felted birthday cake best because of the fuzzies. ;)

We also went to the Museum of Glass which had half price admission. Really nice exhibit of Lino Tagliapietra's glass art - amazing, amazing art.

We first stopped in the glass "hot shop" where you can watch various artisans blow glass. Super cool architeture, super hot glass process. It was really fascinating to watch. Here's a video of the kind of work you could see when visiting the hot shop...

And below are some other photos of the beautiful ceiling on the glass bridge entrance...

My photos don't do the glassworks justice. Go see all this in person when you get a chance. The display on Lino's art runs for several more months. He is considered one of the premier glass blowers of all time. The colors he uses are absolutely stunning. And he has a fun sense of humor as an artist.

If you ever wanted to check out the Museum of Glass, now is a great chance to see works from a true master from Murano...

That felted birthday cake looks yummy.

Did you know, you can also take the Grand Staircase to the waterfront, makes for a nice walk on a warm night.

This coming Thursday, May 15th, is Artwalk. Admission will be free at the Tacoma Art Museum all day, and the Museum of Glass and Washington State History Museum from 5 to 8.

they ARE great pics - is the Museum of Glass in Tacoma? I've heard so much about it - I must make that an Artist's Date....something is bugging me about my schedule next Thursday - I can't think what, but if there's nothing going down, I'm going to go do a Tacoma run. Thx for the tip!

How long are they visiting for?

Tacomamama,
Ooh, free is even better. :)
We took one staircase down at the Glass Museum(spiral one w/ fountain), and that was a pretty view. I really like the way the building and grounds are designed at the Glass Museum. The funnel shaped Hot Shop area is totally cool.

Holy,
Yup, that's the one. Tacoma is so close that day trips are easy when visitors are in town.
(The grandparents left this past week.)

I loved watching in the hot shop - well worth the price of admission! I'm glad you got to go. :)

Jeri,
Yeah, the hot shop was really cool. I liked watching the teamwork as they created the glass art.
