« Playing Foolball With The Boy | Main | The Great American Belly Flop! »
I went to a Mom-Daughter Bead Club on Monday night at a local craft store. All the gals make bead jewelry and socialize. I think Claire liked it a lot. She was mostly into "organizing" her beads because I got her a plastic compartmentalized box for her to separate her supplies into. I was working on a multi-strand necklace using beads that Jeri gave me as a thank you for our beach trip. I hope it turns out nice.
I was thinking during the course of the evening that this beading stuff is very female, but that the general activity of "crafts" is not necessarily. I had a funny conversation with a guy friend at church last week about the issue of "crafts". I was making fun of him because he was running a craft table for our kids' program. I said, "Wow, I didn't take you for a craftsy sorta' guy." He said somewhat belligerently, "Guys aren't 'craftsy'." I said, "What about working on cars? Isn't that sort of 'craftsy'? You're working with your hands on something that you're building and creating. That's like a craft."
My guy friend about hit the roof. He's a huge car buff and can build up his own cars from a rusty pile of non-running junk. He said, "Yeah. Working on cars is just like crafts! We guys all buy our cutesy little supplies and go meet in hobby groups over tea cookies and compare our projects. And then we also throw little tupperware-like parties to buy even MORE cute supplies! Working on cars is EXACTLY like crafts!"
I was totally laughing. He was being his usual obnoxious male self. :)
Maybe I'm just a dumb girl, but I still think working on cars is a good parallel to crafts. There are whole stores with parts, accessories, add-ons, repair materials, etc, kinda' like a CRAFT store. And I've seen those speciality auto clubs that meet in the A&W parking lot with hoods up and guys jabbering together about this or that horsepower blah-blah-blah. They're talking about what they MADE, how they improved it, and what they bought, installed, repaired, and improved both functionally and aesthetically. How is this any different than a BEAD CLUB really? We talk function and aesthetics and supplies. We share resource ideas and our latest project victory or frustration. And we show off shiny stuff too. :)
So really, is it THAT different? (Maybe it's just the word "crafts" that bothers guys. After all, they make stuff too.)

A great way to compare the idea of crafts between men and women would be to compare Craft magazine and Make magazine. A better example of crafts for guys would be when they get together to cut up some PVC and make marshmallow or potato guns.
The biggest difference is that most of the time, guys create alone. Part of it is that it is too difficult to lug the tools, supplies, etc. to work on something.
Also, we each have a specific way of doing something, and don't necessarily want someone offering their two bits on how to do it. There are exceptions, this spring I had a couple of guys come over, and we all built www.instructables.com/id/EIEP9AY8O4EXCFL
AVM/ for our daughters' American girls.
