« Aumont doesn't pitch for World; out of Olympics, too | Main | Silva the latest casualty for a battered rotation »
Sometimes to take a step forward, you have to take a step backward.
But it's better if you make that decision yourself and not have it thrust upon you.
Ryan Rowland-Smith had the move thrust upon him Sunday, told that he was going to get his dream job, that of a starting pitcher, but that he was going to start making the conversion from the bullpen while pitching for Triple-A Tacoma.
The Mariners made the move because they had to find room to get closer J.J. Putz on the roster from the disabled list.
And they did it because they don't have and starters they're in love with at Tacoma.
Which leads to the obvious question - who will the Mariners use in the rotation if, as expected, they trade Jarrod Washburn in the coming 10-day run-up to the July 31 trade deadline.
It might be Rowland-Smith, the left-hander who threw 76 pitches in relief Saturday and who could be stretched out to a 100-pitch capability by early August. And it might be someone other than Washburn who's traded, but the left-handed is the only likely candidate from the rotation to get shipped out, really.
Erik Bedard is still hurting, although he could throw on flat ground Monday or Tuesday. Carlos Silva is in the first year of a four-year contract and it's next to impossible to trade someone in that situation. Miguel Batista is just getting over vback and arm woes and still isn't pitching at all well. And, of course, Felix Hernandez isn't getting traded no matter what.
Rowland-Smith, who wasn't available to talk to the media after Sunday's announcement was made, has made it clear he would prefer to be a starter, if he was given a vote in the matter. But he didn't want to have to go down to Tacoma to get the job.
The prediction here is that he's back and in the rotation by late August, or sooner.

Is there a valid reason that Batista has not been placed on DL? He has supposedly had physical issues - back, groin etc. It would make more sense to keep Rowland-Smith here and stretch him out each outing. Heck - his 75 pitches yesterday is better than Batista had given in a while. Also - has anyone found the pictures Vidro must have stashed? Why else would he still be here?
