Sexson slapped with six-game suspension; he'll appeal

The enforcement division of the Commissioner's Office came down hard on Seattle first baseman Richie Sexson Friday.

Sexson, who charged the mound Thursday night after feeling Texas' starter Kason Gabbard had thrown at his head, was hit with a six-day suspension by Bob Watson, Vice President of On-Field Opperations for MLB.

The suspension was due to start Friday night, but Sexson filed an appeal, and the suspension won't be enforced until the appeal is heard. So Sexson is expected to be in Seattle's lineup tonight when the slumping Mariners start a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox.

Traditionally appeals are cut in half, more or less, upon appeal so Sexson is likely to come out of this with a three- or four-game suspension after having charged the mound and having thrown his batting helmet at Gabbard.

Felix Hernandez, who had to be restrained after the brawl started, and two Rangers, catcher Gerald Laird and pitcher Sidney Ponson, both were fined.

What an idiot, that pitch was high and outside according to FSN tracker. He can spend his suspension visiting the opthamologist.

Next weekend should be sweet as the two worst teams in baseball match up: Padres (12-23) @ Mariners (14-22).

FIRE BILL !#$*^@* BAVASI -- and I might just come back to Safeco Field...

I have tickets for that monumental showdown! And for the Tigers and Indians in July.... those both looked like great games before the season started.

Dang! I was hoping Sexson's bat would be out of the line up for a while so we could get a decent hitter in there. Come on, Richie, sit down and let someone hitting above the Mendoza line have a crack at it.... OOPS, that would be Ichiro...

Go Richie!!! About time someone on the team showed they've got some seeds. Nice shot with the helmet as well.

Right or wrong (mostly wrong) I think Richie was just trying to spark the M's. That and whatever personal problems may have just boiled over between his lousy season and the M's lousy season.

So what now for the M's? I bet Bedard is just counting the days until he is a F/A and it probably has Yankees written all over it. They say winning is contagious. Losing is as equally contagious. The M's are proof of that. The M's seem to be a team that has had the life just sapped right out of them. There is no leader in the club house. In the past there was Edgar and Buhner. But, now there is no one. No one in that club house seems to be stepping up to that role. Deep down I want to be optimistic, but that light is fading fast. It is a shame there is no hitting to compliment our starting rotation. Now it seems the M's starting rotation is even to be catching the losing bug. Something go to change and it has to change now.

By the way, what ever happened to Groverfan and bavasilover?

Richie was lucky Gabbard was off target. Laird called for the pitch inside and they WERE throwing at him. Richie knew he was going to get plunked, Gabbard knew and everyone watching at home knew. It is one thing to plunk a guy in the hip but there is no excuse to headhunt. He was trying to bean him with a monster fastball and overthrew it. Richie's mistake was hitting him with the helmet.
It was bad aim and seemed like a little much considering it didn't really get that close to him but at the same time this club has been compacent all year. It is nice to see someone react to something for once.
Besides the look on Gabbard's face when he got off the bottom of that pile was great. You know he peed a little when Richie charged him. That is a lot of ticked off frustrated ball player heading his way quickly.

I'll be there too james -- mostly because I promised a friend who is up in Alaska that I'd get the JJ bobblehead to complete the collection for his new baby. Oh well, maybe we'll get to see Peavy or something...

I love baseball and if they were just losing I'd have no trepidations about going. They aren't just losing though they are playing poorly. I can watch a team lose that is trying to win but when they have no heart in it then it is tough to watch. It would nice by that time to some energetic play.
I wish I could blame it all on Sexson or Joh but it seems to be up and down the entire lineup. Nobody seems to care. That is why I was a little excited about last nights melee. It wasn't necessary but maybe it is the start of some actual fire.

But I've got great seats in right field and I hope Wlad puts on a show for me to see first hand.

As much of a rush it was to see Gabbard go fetal for Richie, I can't help but wish his time away from the M's was more permanent. Big-Richie for too long has been more of a BIG-LETDOWN. Mojo Sinkin'.

Can we appeal the suspension and get it raised to 10 games? Sexson sucks, we are better off without him.

How about 60 days or better yet 600 days.
