A new record smallest Safeco Field crowd: 15,818

The Mariners just announced Tuesday's crowd: 15,818.

It is the smallest crowd in Safeco Field history. The previous low was 15,989 against the White Sox on May 2, 2007.

And given the level the Mariners are playing to right now - down 10-1 in the seventh inning, who can blame fans for staying away?

For the record, seven of the 10 smallest crowds in Safeco Field have come in the Mariners' first 17 home games this year.

Although I doubt bringing Junior back would help the Mariners salvage this season there is one big reason Lincoln & Co. want to see him return to Seattle : ticket sales.

Shotgun!

If this losing continues that figure will go down even further. Except when the Yanks and BoSox comes to town. Their fans will just fill up all the empty seats. God I hope they turn it around!

Honestly I don't understand why. Sure no one wants to see a team lose. But Monday was the best baseball night weather ever. If I didn't have to work I totally would have been there. I'd love to have been there tonight.

Yeah it really sucks when the Ms are losing, but you can't be that fair weather. Cmon people, fill up the stands.

As a fan, I want to agree with EdgarE that people should go to the games regardless of the team's performance. But that's not reality. The Mariners have been subpar for some time now. They are a large market team and need to compete for the division. If the current people in place can't make it happen--and I mean both management and players--then changes need to happen so that it does. The reality is that the Mariners are not the Red Sox or the Cubs, and they are not going to draw fans or interest unless they win. That simple.

When the weather warms up, the suckers will fill the seats.

Fire Bavasi. This team has no spark....no chemistry.

Finally, the fans are getting a clue.

Stop showing up to the games! Not until at least they start winning.

If this continues, changes in the Front Office will have to be made.

Bad product, bad attendance. Good thing the Bush administration is in power, otherwise the FDA might actually be investigating this faulty product known as the Mariners.

Last year I could get a great seat for $45 on the day of the game. This year the same seat cost me $65 and the team is not doing well.

I was expecting smaller crowds this year even if we had a decent team.

Raising ticket prices so much has kept me away and I am not surprise one bit seven of the 10 smallest crowds at Safeco Field have come this year in 16 home games.

Why I don't go to games:
Ticket prices are too high. Baseball's inability to institute a hard salary cap is ludicrous.
The games are generally too long. You can fix that in a big way by calling the strike zone the way it is drawn up. It will get the hitters swinging instead of sitting there waiting for a juicy one. If you don't believe me, get down in a catchers squat and look where your head is at compared to someone standing next to you. A ball received head high by the catcher is often ruled a ball as being too high. Someone explain to me how a pitch at the belt can be too high.
Too damn much artificial noise at the games. I realize this is done to make the game an event and attract marginal fans. Problem is they are making it worse for the real baseball fan.........or at least THIS real baseball fan.

#1. Reduce the beer prices
#2. Replace Bavasi

Further....this team needs a sparkplug, some fiery guy who can influence the chemistry. Think Pete Rose, or Johnny Damon, or David Eckstein. Our best player, Ichiro, is dysfunctionally quiet; Ibanez comes across as a mellow "dad". We need someone LOUD. And with the talent to back it up. Then again, this is Seattle, Safeco field being the only place I've ever been asked to "quiet down"!!! So maybe the concept is a foreign one to management.

Moe, are you implying the games are BORING?

For $30 to $50 bucks a pop ... I had BETTER be entertained!!!

Product stinks, tickets are overpriced, fans stay home, team gets sold, franchise gets moved. Sound familiar?

Thanks Mariners managment for raising ticket prices when the Yanks and Sox come to town. Nice way to profit off other team's success.

I can't believe no one goes. They'll show up on Knitting Night, for sure.....

I have purchased two half-season-ticket packages since 1995.

I gave up my 40 games in Section 129 behind home plate this year in protest of our GM's ongoing clueless-ness regarding basic roster construction.

I doubt the M's were too concerned, they are charging $65 today, on the M's website, for single-game tickets in the same section where my seats cost $38 last season.

34 games into the season, we are tied for LAST PLACE in the American League.

The Mariners' chickens are coming home......to roost.

I'm predicting ------------- smaller crowd tonight! :(

So worth the ticket price increase...

RE: * Ticket prices are too high
I don't go unless I find someone on the street selling tickets for $10 or less. I realize this won't work for most people, who don't live nearby.

RE: * Games are too long
I like to get there around the 7th inning. Last year that gave me an average of about 4 and a half innings to watch. This year, maybe not so much and I should go earlier. That's fine; the people selling tickets on the street don't like to hang around too late.

RE: * Too much artificial noise
I swear by earplugs.

If anyone says the games are too long, then you aren't a real baseball fan so don't go. You are stupid to make that comment. You should know what you are getting into when you go to a game. Is like saying you don't like Seahawks games in the winter because its cold outside, if thats and issue DON'T GO! I'm a season ticket holder and a true fan so I'm willing to freeze my butt off, its not fun, but totally worth it.

Also the artificial noise at Mariners games needs to be cut, too much overplayed hip-hop and outdated oldies. The games they play between the innings, besides the helmets and hydros are all stupid. I do however like the player interviews and q&a sessions they play on the big screen.

I really hope the FO takes note of the fan displeasure shown through the declining attendance, even though they won't. You would never see this in a city like NY, Chicago, Boston, or LA.

I know I will likely get lambasted for this, as the cool thing now is to say Griffey coming back isn't a reality, the solution, or he won't help the team win. Mariners 'experts' on the PI soundoffs like to go against the trends by saying bringing back Junior isn't the option. But the smart thing on the business end would be to bring him back, as it would likely draw 30,000 plus on weeknights and sellouts on the weekends. Thats all we should expect, however its worth hoping he could spark the team and they would start winning.

I love the Mariners with all of my heart, but I'm glad to see the low attendance numbers, because right now the FO, BB specifically, is enemy number one. You would think that even this group would get tired of mediocrity sooner or later, but it really doesn't look that way.

The only thing worse than losing is losing boring. The early Seahawks lost a lot, but they were usually still entertaining about it.

I'd rather watch paint dry than watch what I have seen the past week.

Bo. Ring. + No. Ring. = No. Cha-Ching.

Bring in Jr. for DH. Vidro is garbage.

Wilkerson is a slob. Didn't that waste/loser get cut yet?
