Under contruction

I've mentioned in the past few weeks that I was writing new software for our blogs to run on. The basics are now all done, so I've decided to switch this blog over to it. We'll have more new features coming soon.

If you haven't already, you'll want to sign up for a seattlepi.com membership if you'd like to comment on any post.

This new system will make it much easier for us to post and control comments left by users. You may also let us know if a comment is inappropriate, just click the request review button at the end of the comment in question. Please only submit for review comments that violate our Terms of Service. This includes comments that are completely (non-baseball) off-topic. Repeated offenders may be banned.

If you find any obvious problems or run across cryptic error messages, please e-mail me. Including actual error messages always helps. We've done plenty of testing, but it's still possible something slipped by.

One thing that bugs me is that, we have to go through an extra screen to get back to the thread after we've posted...

...Other than that it seems to be running much faster.

Registration has come! I love it!

My life is swamped in HTML code. It might take me awhile to get used to the "special codes." We need a "blockquote" special code. Thanks.

Your comment may also be used in the newspaper and/or be used as a Letter to the Editor.

That's a scary thought, isn't it, Logan?

Good work, Mike! This will certainly help things around here.

And, another feature request: Comment Editing.

I thought my blog app was going to be the first to offer it, but I've quit development on it due to time restrictions (and that it takes me longer to code using "dull" (i.e. several versions old) tools).

Of course, that's only possible once you've implemented registration. But since that's the new way around here, it's now a feature you could implement...

Although our Terms of Service allow it I think anyway, the letter to the editor line wasn't specifically supposed to be here (the comment routines were based on the Sound Off code we use on our main site), so I took it out.

I'll think about the comment editing feature. We have it in our forums which limit it to 10 or 15 minutes after your posted it.

Did someone go in and reserve the handles of some of the regulars? I've never seen anyone else post here as "Curt" but registration said that it was already taken. Oh well, I'm just happy to see the registration! Thanks Mike!!!

Curt, if there is another Curt who has an account with the PI - not necessarily posting to the baseball blog, there are other blogs - then it's "taken" already.

I have been registered with the PI for a while.

There are going to be a bunch of people who won't be posting anymore. Some people don't want to have to give out their personal information just to post something on an internet blog.

Hallelujah

You don't HAVE to give out personal information. You could just lie-- it's very easy.

It will always be the case the some people will not register. I hope that the benefits outweigh the 30 seconds it takes to go through the process. With the same login, you can also get e-mail newsletters (get M's headlines in your Inbox daily), join our forums, join our Sound Off and will drive other features in the future too.

Hopefully the small hoop of registering will deter some trolls...

I didn't lie actually...

There might be a Curt, but how may JIs do you think are out there? Was Suzi not available?

Curt, you should open the character map and put a little thingy on the end of your name to distingish yourself from the other Curt.

I'm pleased to see this if nothing else it'll discourage some of more nasty comments and encourage the baseball talk unless other was named by you Mike.
I appreicate this alot cause of found some of the comments directed at myself and others bit insulting.

You have to give them your email address. That's personal information.

Suzi was taken. Sigh.

Posted by JIŽ at 9/12/05 5:31 p.m.

You don't have to give them your own e-mail address, you can give them anyone's.

#75

Posted by SuziQ at 9/12/05 5:35 p.m.

Don't you have to respond to an email from them to activate the acccount? I did.

#76

Posted by JIŽ at 9/12/05 5:35 p.m.

Scratch that, you have to activate it.

Very clever these people are...

#77

Posted by JIŽ at 9/12/05 5:36 p.m.

That was quick- of course you are right...

#78

Posted by JIŽ at 9/12/05 5:36 p.m.

It's about a 100,000x faster. Maybe it's just because thread isn't two weeks long.

#81

Posted by SuziQ at 9/12/05 5:51 p.m.

They use this same program for posting on the hurricane blog. It stayed pretty fast even with hundreds of entries.

#83

Posted by Mike Thompson at 9/12/05 6:00 p.m.

Much of the hurricane stuff ran off the "Sound Off" code (if you aren't familiar with that, it's a feature that lets you attach comments to stories on our site -- we'll soon be rolling out out to a lot more articles), but it shares a lot of the same code with this.

This software is definitely WAY faster than our old Movable Type setup (and even more so on the admin end which you guys don't get to see). We'll be migrating our other blogs over soon too which will improve things even more. And one of these days, we might even upgrade our servers a bit.
