Two M's strike gold

Bret Boone and Ichiro Suzuki have been selected as Gold Glove Award winners for the 2004 season.

This is the fourth straight year Ichiro has won the award.

Boone has now won three straight Gold Gloves and four overall.

[Editor's note: the number of career awards for Bret Boone was incorrect when this entry was originally published]

Half-price sale going on at Safeco for gold-glove merchandise...

Derek Jeter at SS? Who did he (or Steinbrenner) threaten to make that happen???

That's really scary!!!

Posted by: PositivePaul at November 2, 2004 02:22 PM

Yea, this award is always kind of fishy.

Anybody who watched the M's this year knows that Boone probably didn't deserve it this time around. Although maybe this just makes up for a couple he should have won in the past.

Posted by: Mike Thompson at November 2, 2004 02:28 PM

True. But who REALLY should've gotten the 2B award? Belliard? Was there anyone better than Boonie at 2B this year, even though he was grossly sub-standard?

I would've given the SS award to Aurillia before I gave it to Jeter. And he played the last 2.5 months in the NL.

Omar
Crosby
Young
Guillen

Anyone but Jeter...

Posted by: PositivePaul at November 2, 2004 02:43 PM

Jeter?

Wanna joke

Posted by: Ichiro Rox at November 2, 2004 02:55 PM

I almost puked when I saw that Jeter got one. Most overrated player in baseball.

Posted by: bseblfevr9 at November 2, 2004 03:09 PM

bseblfevr9,

Dude, Sexson is spelled with an "s," not a "t." And how in the world will the Mariners afford Ordonez, Sexson, and Beltre???

They are the only team on your list to sign three high-profile free agents...have a homer bias much??

Posted by: Wes at November 2, 2004 03:21 PM

Jeter??????? Give me a f*&%ing break! That's a total joke. Also, George Bush can go to hell.

Posted by: When is spring training? at November 2, 2004 03:31 PM

Oops!! I meant George Steinbrenner..... but while we're at it....

Posted by: When is spring training? at November 2, 2004 03:34 PM

The gold glove is "fishy"? Isn't it given to the player with the best record?

Posted by: BoonieFan at November 2, 2004 04:23 PM

Maybe the M's should acquire Omar, Delgado and another outfielder. What does everyone else think?

Posted by: ichiro998 at November 2, 2004 04:55 PM

We should probably question Silver Slugger too. Ichiro had a better season this year than 2001 offensively but this didn't win the Silver Slugger this year.

Posted by: ray at November 2, 2004 07:21 PM

Hey, don't blame me I voted with the majority.

Evidently it's the groundkeepers who should get the award:

"In his four seasons with the Mariners, Ichiro has made just nine errors in 1,426 total chances and gunned down 40 runners on the bases.

"He is the best fundamental right fielder I have ever played with," Boone said. "He deserves it."

Boone, one of only two players in 2003 to win both a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger, struggled offensively this past season, batting .251 with 24 home runs and 83 RBIs, and actually committed twice as many errors (14) than he did the previous year when he was, by far, the best-fielding player at his position.

"It wasn't one of my best years, but I've had tremendous years before and didn't win (a Gold Glove)," Boone said. "There were a lot of distractions this season, and when I heard that I won, it was positive note on a tough year."

Boone credited the Safeco Field groundskeepers for making it one of the best playing surfaces in the Major Leagues.

"In my four years, I've had maybe eight to 10 bad hops, total. "Bob (head groundkeeper Bob Christofferson) and his crew do an awesome job.""

I guess they don't give it to the player with the best record. That's stupid.

Hey vet!? Who cares where youv'e been. This forum is about baseball and an occasional point about whatever else! I would have said the same if your lying crook Kerry were in office!!! So watch the language and chill out!! It'll be okay in the morning!!!

I'm glad I came here to read some thoughts on Mariners' baseball and get away from "all things electoral." Dear God...

Posted by: Not Mike Thompson at November 2, 2004 11:46 PM

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/baseball/197903_mari03.html

Boone had a .978 fielding percentage and stands at .986 for his career. That's the highest among active second basemen and sixth all-time among those who have played at least 1,000 games at second. He said he thought he deserved the award, though he wouldn't even count 2004 among his top three defensive seasons.

"There's a lot of debate about the Gold Glove," the Mariners second baseman said. "I think for years, it was basically an offensive award. But the past few years, I think people are really starting to take it seriously and really writing down who deserves it. I'm very, very appreciative and honored that people recognize that when I didn't have a good year offensively."

stay optimistic !

even thouhgh i dont believe in the Mariner owner ship, i stay optimistic that some young player will come up and ignight the mariners into the playoffs in 2005.

STAY OPTIMISTIC !!!

P.S. Howard, do as you say, say as you do.

Posted by: BenJamin at November 3, 2004 01:13 AM

Boonie did not have a great year.

BUT, he must of be givin this award for a good reason, and that is becasue he IS one of the THEE VERY BEST 2B in the AL/ of all time in my own opinion.

he might not make it in to the HOF, BUT, he carries on the tradition.

Ray, Bob, and now Brett.. for one family to have three great baseball players succeed at one time or another means a lot becasue how many of the other players ( on the all time MLB/ Minor league ball list ) that have ever played been known for being as talented and smart, heroic, or dumb then this family ?

Boone culd be MY manager any year, any team, any day... hearing him on KJR a few weeks ago... he sounded like a manager, a man that knew exactly what to say. he might become a better manager then baseball player some day..

i believe in BOONE !

F- it , if he doesnt excel our expectations... he has many other good traits to pass on to the future of the seattle mariners that will help US win a world Sieries...

LETS CHILL..

Posted by: Benjamin at November 3, 2004 01:19 AM

You must have missed hearing Bret say he never wants to manage a baseball team.

I guess seeing what his dad has gone through kinda gives him a differnet perspective.

He has the 6th best record in his position for players with over 1,000 games.

Let's dump him. We could get the worst one in Soriano.

Posted by: Suzi at November 3, 2004 10:49 AM

Boone had to conform with playing with a different lineup of rookies the entire second half, and he was still able to have a gold glove season. Sure he had better seasons the two years before, but he is still the best second baseman in the AL. Plus, he has all those intangibles!
