Taking pictures in the new world

Picture
No Photography from naughton321 on flickr

From the Telegraph in London, via AJ: "Has our increasingly paranoid society declared war on the humble 'weekend snapper' "?

"There's the amateur photographer confronted at a subway station in LA after being told by a misinformed station guard that he was 'breaking the 9/11 law.' There's the protests taking place in New York against the proposed ban on photography in train stations. There's the Melbourne shopping centre and tourist attraction that banned photography in order to 'stop terrorism.'

"There's even a story about a man who was visited at home and interrogated by FBI agents after being spotted taking photographs at the Port of Los Angeles."

One more quote from this piece, embedded as a brief Q&A:

"'Is taking photographs here against the law?' I ask.

'I think so,' he says."

(The story is here.)

The Telegraph speculates that London is leading the list of European cities that are camera adverse post-9/11. If there were such a list in the U.S., Seattle would be on it.

Artist Shirley Scheier was handcuffed and held in the back of a police car for photographing telephone poles, here.

The FBI investigated two men taking pictures on the ferry, who turned out to be tourists, here.

And Homeland Security knocked on the door of photography student Ian Spiers, who caught its eye for taking pictures at the Ballard Locks, here.

The last two stories are double hitters, as they also involve racial profiling.

According to our President, the terrorists are out to destroy our way of life and our freedoms. According to that definition, they have already won. I wonder if they had any idea how easy it would be.
